Signing on to work with Canada is like taking a long walk on a short plank.

This could be true. I mean anything is possible. But there are couple of things that make me skeptical:

1. The next time that Filliponi tweets an accurate thing that a "source" told him will be the first. At least based on what is posted on here.
2. When you have one of the the only 32 jobs of a certain type in the entire world and only a small subset of those come open every year...it doesn't matter how toxic or terrible the situation might be, there is going to be no shortage of folks willing to take the job. Even one year, a bad one at that, of NFL tenure stamps you as an "NFL Guy" for life. You can then just ride the carousel until you want to get off. If there are non-NFL coaches (say from the college level) or guys looking to move up in the NFL coaching ranks who are passing on an open job...then they are morons and I wouldn't want them working anyways.

Canada's resume does cause questions about him. he may be an asshole that nobody has been able to tolerate for more than 2 years.

Fillipponi wanted Munchak. Period. If it was anyone else (ANYONE), he wasn’t going to like the hire.

It’s Canada. The Panthers were 5-11. Derp.

How about the fact that the Panthers run game looked good without Run-CMC… and looked amazing with him. Maybe THAT is why the Steelers hired this particular O-line coach.

to the bold ....

that is very true from my perspective , he is so bad I quit following him long before I ever got the ban stick from twitter ... some of the stuff he would say was so far fetched not a grain of it could have been based in fact ... he makes Mark Madden look like a patron saint of integrity

What were peoples expectations with Canada’s first year……..let’s review, Pouncey (gone), DeCastro (gone) , AV…(gone) Aging QB, Brand new first year RB. Brand new first year TE. Does anyone else but me, think that expectations are….a little….. unrealistic….and yet I’m not sure that any OC was liked here….going back to 2010.

I feel certain that there were a few people that wanted Tomlin fired before the ink dried.

my issue is this ......

we could not move the football with Canada calling the plays we went the last 8 games with 1 first half TD .....

when we went no huddle and Ben took over as the play caller we moved the ball and scored points with the best of them ...

that isn't a scheme problem , that isn't a a personnel problem , that's a play caller problem IMO

This argument has been posed with every OC that we’ve had for the past 20 years……Canada, Fichtner, Haley, Arians, and Wiz. Sure (no huddle) almost always works because the defense can’t get set without calling a timeout. There was an interview with Ben a year or so ago and was asked why they don’t run no huddle more often, and he said it had a lot to do with fatigue and personnel on the field. He said, “You can’t play that way for 60 mins”……and by the way, the plays are still being called by the coach. Remember Ben had the green dot for 18 years.

sorry bud not a believer there ... the play calling changed dramatically when in no huddle it wasnt just the speed of lining up ....

maybe some calls came in from the sidelines but I believe Ben made most of those calls

To this day, I remember Ben running the no huddle and Haley called something and Ben looked at the sideline in complete disgust…..not sure which play he ran but it made me laugh out loud. I’m not sure anyone will be able to run the no huddle like Ben could. Anyway, without interviewing Ben, we will never know. All I know from what he said, is, that you can’t run an offense like that for the entire game.

yeah no doubt would be very exhausting .... that said as much as it is for the offense it is for the def ( or more so ) no reason you cant run it for a few plays in a row go away from it and come back to it in crucial situations 3 plays on 2 plays off , 2 plays on 3 plays off etc

In an effort to bring this back around, with all the changes going on with the Steelers, I would like to see another year of Canada.

Let’s not go overboard with the “no huddle is awesome” narrative. Some of those stats and scores were piled up against fairly passive defensive alignments playing against a multiple score lead.

Again, two different offensive coordinators in 2020 and 2021. The exact same game plans. Common denominator is the QB and a poor offensive line.

Do I think Canada has got a great offense tucked away somewhere? Heck no. But I do think he has an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT offense than we saw in 2021.

Is the “Matt Canada” offense better than the “Ben Roethlisberger” offense? No idea. Guess we’ll find out.

I was expecting to see some different plays, formations, motions, etc. none of which was new and different.

I'm 100% with you on this. Hawk, in regards to your argument. Our expectation might have been too high, but Canada showed no ability to make ANY adjustements to his play calling the entire 2nd half of the season. If we were effective with Ben calling plays from no huddle and he didn't make an attempt to put some of those elements into his play calling, what was he doing weekly when putting together a game plan? Why CONTINUALLY having 2-3 receivers running routes 5 yards and less? Multiple play calls with receivers catching the ball at or behind the line of scrimmage? If we were struggling so bad to run the ball, why NO adjustments? 2 tight ends sets? A fullback? We had a well paid, hardly used FB that they FINALLY used for 2 or 3 plays to lead block for the run and it WORKED, but he only tried it a few times. If your game plan isn't working at ALL for 4-5-6 weeks and your game plan doesn't change at all, WHAT are you doing as the OC? I've seen NOTHING from Canada that tells me he's got a clue.
