Hunt has essentially run the past two drafts. He was instrumental in the trade for Minkah. He is (was?) likely our next GM…

the solution is simple ... you do not permit the interview ( that is well within the rules ) and tell Hunt look you are our guy and we want to start the transition now slowly over the next several months and as soon as Kevin steps down you will be named officially

You’d have to think that if they are going to let Colbert run the draft that the next GM must be close by.
Is there a GM candidate out there that would want to come to a team after the old GM has drafted a class and then left before the season even started? Unless it came with a three-year free pass, it’s non-sense…

If we just ignore the Clayton "report" (which is how this all started) then this is all fairly straightforward business as usual in Pittsburgh.
Clayton has since retracted his report, going so far as to deny he ever said it. Whatever. Another dude struggling to stay relevant.
Assume Colbert never had any intentions of retiring or walking away at any point during the 2022 NFL "year". Then Hunt and Khan taking interviews is just the usual couple of look-see's those guys get every so often. Colbert is still year-to-year and Khan/Hunt still have to weigh whether continuing in their current position(s) and waiting for Colbert to call it quits is "better" than aggressively pursuing other options.
For me, that is the way this all seems to make the most sense. Just ignore the Clayton report...

That’s exactly right. It’s not even a topic without that “report”. I would also think with all that is being discussed around GMs and coaches that if Colbert was leaving, this would also be part of the overall discussions amongst the talking heads.

I really think that unless this all goes south in a hurry, Colbert sticks around another few years (2? 3?) to lay the foundation for the next "window". Replenishment on defense and complete the rebuild on offense with a QB, some OL, and a few WRs. Then walk away in like 2024 or so knowing you left the franchise with a good foundation to build from.
Following that train of logic...it would seem likely that the team would be wise to have internal discussions with Hunt and Khan about what they see a post-Colbert landscape and organization chart looking like. See if they are on board with the vision. If not...wish them well and write glowing recommendation letters?

If either he or Khan gets hired elsewhere Steelers get two 3rd rounders as a compensation.

Hunt goes to the Raiders.
Khan goes to the Bears.
We get two R3 picks in 2022, and two R3 picks in 2023.
Then, the Raiders trade their R1 pick for Devin Bush... and the Bears trade their R1 pick for Percy Harvin.

We'll trade them Brandon Hunt for David Carr. Fair.
