I hated him in the 70's, but I respected him.
Grew to enjoy him in the booth.
A good man, father, husband, and grandfather. The best possible epitaph.

RIP to a coaching legend. I thought Madden was the best analyst I’ve heard in the 40 some odd years I’ve watched the NFL. You knew it was a big game if Summerall and Madden were calling it.

Madden was a legend. As a coach, commentator and his role with the Madden video game series which I'm sure help create millions of football fans.
RIP Coach.
The last game Madden called.

I hope John Madden is now in heaven and the first thing God says to him is:
"the ball never hit the ground."

Great commentator - great pairing with play by play man Pat Summerall - footballs equivalent to Chick an Steu (Lakers old broadcasters)

He is definitely one of the most important figures in NFL history with the way he has touched the game in so many aspects of his career. He will be remembered fondly by myself and most other football fans forever, and always be associated with the game of football.
Very few people have ever had the type of impact he had, and he became such a revered and powerful force that enhanced how people thought about the game.
RIP coach Madden

"the ball never hit the ground."
Maybe, maybe not. Too bad we didn't have the tech we have now. We would all know for sure. Actually, I think it should just remain a mystery... part of NFL lore. :chuckle:
...or touched Fuqua!
Well, since Frenchy would naver say, logic dictates that it did touch him. :wink02:
R.I.P. Coach! :jolly:

John Madden "I don't agree with what the Patriots are doing right here....I would play for overtime."

He was a great sport about this making fun of himself the next year several times.
He was an icon of the NFL, but he used to whine every time the Steelers beat the Raiders.

Years ago, before he was famous, at the end of a Frank Caliendo stand-up show, he would ask the audience to give him a name/person and a situation. Someone yelled out "Madden!!!" and I added "...opening Christmas presents with Brett Favre".
Needless to say, Frank chuckled... and then performed a riotous scenario.
