https://cms.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/imported/PIT/photos/2010_Gameday/8_14_Lions/2010_DET_Brown_Article.jpgIt’s called Liberty City, and if it sounds like a place where the American dream thrives, where opportunity abounds, well, that’s misleading. Liberty City, outside of Miami, actually is a place that’s the opposite of what its name implies.

To grow up in Liberty City is to understand what gunfire sounds like, and if you live there long enough, or maybe more accurately, stay alive there long enough, it’s impossible not to be touched by crime and violence. To get out of there in a way that involves neither a ride in the back of a police car nor a hearse is an accomplishment...............

Am I the only one who thought it was an article about him playing GTA in his spare time at first? (Liberty City is where GTA 3 and 4 are set and theres alot of crime)

I am in Liberty City occassionally when I work in Miami. It is very rough and filled with bums and gangs. Nearby Overtown is the infamous place that used to murder tourists in the 1980s.

Jesus @ 30 TDs + 11 TD passes in 5 games. That's unreal.

That's great for him, but it's not an unusual story. Much like any kid who grew up watching/playing in the Muck Bowl, hoping to make it someday. Seems like South FL is a hotbed for shitty places to grow up.

I've been to Liberty City once right around the time when tourists were getting killed in Overton. Very scarey place. Good story of a young man who so far has made the most of his life. I wish him all the best and hope he shines as a member of our Steeler family.

I could not imagine what it would be like to come up in a place like that. Gotta give Brown some props for getting through that and making it where he is today.

Exactly. Those that can overcome those type of obstacles have a portion of my respect. I know Hampton had that sort of past also.
