PF is on his way in proving he is a R1 talent, thankfully the Steelers were able to get him in the 2nd round. I think Harris and PF are going to be making a lot of plays and pro bowls if they stay healthy. The icing on the cake is both have bought into the Steeler way and are great young men. Awesome picks by the Steelers!

It was interesting in his post game interview with Missi, She asked him about his presence of mind to tap that left toe while concentrating on securing the ball. He said that he had been working really hard on that, because he was having problems during camp and pre-season getting both feet down in the back of the end zone, primarily because he was so used to only needing one down in college. I’d say after that catch, that he is well on his way to solving that problem.

I like the bromance between Najee and Muth. They seem to root for each other alot. The whole rookie class sticks together. In press conferences, Najee is always boosting his rookie class teammates.

I've noticed that also and its a good thing.

PF, Gentry and Rader make a pretty stable group. Rader is still a good blocker and has good hands with the plus of being very good on ST.

I’ve been a fan of Gentry and Rader is your average third TE. The big upgrade is obviously Freiermuth over Ebron. I’d love to see them get some draft capital or a body in return for Ebron today.

I loved the Moooooooooth pick and am loving it more and more as time goes on , that said I am also pleasantly surprised by Gentry whom I thought was a trash selection but he seems to be developing into a pretty decent #2 ( he isnt a finished product or at least I hope not but the arrow seems pointed up )

Gentry is a decent blocker and certainly going to get better as he gets more playing time, but after Sunday’s game, teams are going to have to account for him as receiver. I loved the play where he was all alone in the middle of the field, and at 6’8” , 265, that’s a big target.

What a luxury that would be as Muth’s blocking improves, having two TEs that can both block and catch.

He looked pretty fast for someone his size too. They could be one of the best TE duos we've had in a long time

The 2021 draft is looking like a huge success and boon for the Steelers. Right now the team already has 4 rookie starters from this class, and I think they will all remain starters. That is extremely rare for a team to have 4 starters from one draft class.
I think the biggest surprise is Dan Moore. He had a little trouble with Myles Garret last weekend (as most LTs do), but he has been good overall. Outside of Rashawn Slater with the Chargers, I don't know if there has been a better rookie LT this year.

5 starters if you include Harvin. Plus Norwood is getting a lot of snaps on defense. Definitely a productive draft class.

To me the biggest surprise is Norwood. I'm used to our late round picks in the secondary (or any secondary for that matter) usually contributing nothing or being out of the NFL before their rookie contract is up. But the kid has been game, and if he keeps playing like he is, could be a starter in a year or two.

It seems like the make-or-break for how successful the team will be this year is how well the young unproven guys play, and so far they're exceeding all expectations. Will it be enough to win a Super Bowl, probably not. But there is a lot more to be excited about than there was a few weeks ago.

It's definitely something to build on. Having 5 starters in a draft is the type of thing that's a jump off point for something special

Plus we should mention Loudermilk who has also been making significant contributions. I can’t remember when seven draft picks were contributing this much. Obviously some of it is by necessity more than design, but still hard not to be impressed with this batch of rookies stepping up for us.

I think this FO needs to learn its lesson. Everything else being equal...go with young depth not old depth. Old depth has too many frustrating ideas about how good it still is and how much it wants to start. Young depth just plays football.

They could have kept Roche and let Jamir Jones walk but they ended up without either of them. I don't mind getting Ingram but I'd rather have Roche/Jones and develop them rather than Cassius Clay. I know he's for special teams but whatever.

I heard rumor of it being that he wasn’t able (willing?) to play special teams. I get it. You have limited roster spots; so, you can’t really afford to have a backup who doesn’t play special teams. That said, IMO he displayed enough pass-rush moves to keep him regardless of that.

I'm sure it was for special teams reasons. Pretty sure I read somewhere that the team even said that. I guess there is a ton more NFL to find out, but it looks like they were wrong on Jamir Jones and Roche. But...but...Taco might be better than either one. I mean, we pretty much know that he is a better run defender than Jones (of course, who isn't?) and pass rush...I guess we will see...

In simplest terms, Freiermuth fell into R2 due to having shoulder surgery. COVID and such didn’t allow teams the access that they normally would have had. If not for those two factors, he is easily a R1 pick.
And, I mean easily.
The stat that sticks out to me is that in college (and now in the pros) Muth has never (N-E-V-E-R) dropped a pass in the red-zone.

From what I was reading, the Falcons were using him mostly as a blocker for the first five games. Then, they had him run passes. Voila!!! Back-to-bask 100 yard games. (Then he ran into a very good Panthers defense.)
Simple answer: he look to be very, very good.

what hurt him more than Covid was he was injured last year and didnt get a full seasons work in ... PSU all time record holder for TDs at the TE pos.

Andrew Quarless , Jesse James , Ted Kwalick , Kyle Brady ,Mike Gesicki ............

Not that it really matters, but PF does not seem to align with the profile of TEs that get drafted in the first round. Although, Hockenson and Rudolph may be decent comps. Overall, first round TEs have the WR athleticism profile that PF does not have.
Doesn't really matter...

Ebron still brings a mismatch quality to the field with his physical abilities that the others do not. However, he isn't good enough at other TE stuff to make it work in this offense.
Ebron would have been a better fit in previous versions of the steelers offense. His ability to separate down the field would have been an added dimension. Think about those glorious few quarters where Ben regularly hit a rumbling Ladarius Green down the field. Unfortunately for Ebron he does not play in that offense or with that QB.
I still say they should give Ebro.n some run as a MASSIVE slot WR. Not like anyone else they are trying at filling the role is doing a bang up job.

I guess if you think that Green will eventually be able to not get walked back into the QB on every other play, then no. If you do not believe that Green can anchor well enough against NFL DTs, then yes.
I am a soft yes. I can't tell if Green is just a year in an NFL weight room away or if random DTs I've never heard of are gonna just continue to dominate him.

PF has been great. But I don't get "best TE in the league" vibes. I get a better version of Austin Hooper. Or those few really good Kyle Rudolph season vibes. That is a super valuable player. But outside of the redzone, I don't see PF changing teams defensive strategies. On run blocking, he is an extreme upgrade from Jesse James and Eric Ebron. But that takes us to "competently walling off his guy" territory. Not blasting dudes out of their cleats territory like Kittle or pre-back injury Gronkowski.
PF is and will continue to be really good. But I think he stops short of dominant offensive weapon that alters gameplans. And that is fine. BUT...what if Green is not good as a center? Well...no big deal if they can go find one ASAP. If not...then it might not matter if I am wrong and PF is a game-wrecking elder god at the TE position because if the center keeps getting put on skates into the backfield, who cares? None of the plays are gonna work.
This post is all over the place. Likely because I am not sure of my answer. Ask again next year?

I'd argue Green is plenty strong , has solid frame , where I think the problem comes into play is he lacks body mass plenty strong just light so easier to move ( needs sand in his pants they say ) ... Dude is cut for an 0Lineman he needs to bulk up 30 pounds IMO and to be fair he is still learning to play Center he has like 10 games to his life at the pos most of which are in the NFL , he isnt completely used to being that low with snapping responsibilities prior to engagement so he is a half second slower than he is used to of getting hands on his opponent

I agree. The problem I have with Ebron isn’t even about the fact that he isn’t a “complete” TE, it’s that he’s not good enough at what he’s good at. If he had reliable hands to go along with his ability to get open I’d be thrilled with him as an offensive weapon.
But as it is, I much prefer PF’s reliability as a pass catcher, combined with his well rounded game that will only get better.

Whereas, I’m definitely getting those vibes. Muth is already on pace for 8 TDs… which is three better than any seaaon by Kittle, and better than all but two seasons by Kelce. Maybe Muth never has the stretch-the-field yards that they have, but I do indeed see Muth being the Chris Carter of TEs:
