That’s what I don’t get…other teams have guys wide open with four defenders in the general area. Steelers receivers are almost always blanketed by one guy.

He threw one long one and if Washington would have made a bit of effort it would have been a huge gain. The oline and WR have polished their penalties count and dropped balls. Ben isn't calling the shitty plays.

Edman

Defenses will continue to play downhill and attack the Line and stack the box until the QB shows he can beat them and make them back off. The Bengals do not fear Ben.

How is it that Steelers WRs are never open? Are they just not as good as advertised or is it scheme, or is it the QB. I honestly don't know, but when you watch other teams they have WRs running open or loose coverage

Its about physical ability that limits playcalls. The Steelers offensive coaches are professionals, they call what Ben is capable of accomplishing

And somehow none of the players were looking for the ball on an obvious all-out blitz with hot read throws. WR's need to read blitz and be ready for the ball. It's pretty fucking sad and a reflection on some bad coaching right now.

Why? Ours are fine we just need a new (younger) QB that can make throws and most importantly an OL that can block for more than 2.2 seconds.

Because Johnson still doesn't know his playbook and still gives up on routes. That doesn't seem like that is going to be fixed. Washington doesn't have it. I'm sure they draft a WR in the next draft

So far it's as terrible as many expected.

The Offensive Line is tripping over themselves, and even when they give Ben time, he's way too tentative and indecisive to make something happen.

The Steelers, by desperately clinging to the past instead of doing what needed to be done are way behind in the AFC North, and the Ravens, Bengals, and Browns far ahead of them. It's the 1980's all over again.

I am seeing a lot of excuse making on this thread today.

But I am just watching the highlights from other games now. And all these "open" throws everyone is lamenting that the Steelers don't have - all have a few things in common.

They take place in the middle of the field. They are going to receivers operating between defenders either high/low or boundary/hash. The passes are arriving with zip on a flat trajectory and hitting a moving target in the hands leading away from defenders to open grass. Also, these plays are almost universally taking place in the middle the of the field. You know that area that the Steelers offense refuses to tread.

Now think back to what you have seen the past 6+ quarters. That simply does not happen in the Steelers offense. Passes are in the flats, shallow crosses, or go balls along the boundary. Passes often arrive with air under them and to a poor body placement. Moving targets are hit behind them or leading them out of bounds.

It just looks different. Some say scheme. Some say WRs. I say it is the dude pulling the trigger.

No. They are NFL covered. There’s no window there and the times there are and Ben throws it in, it’s dropped. Hence the reason he’s hesitant to throw the ball. I mean it’s common in human nature.

There was a short slant in the first half when they were backed into their own end. Claypool dropped it. It was thrown to his back shoulder on an in breaking slant. The pass was there. Excuses. The scheme isn't failing. The QB is UNABLE or UNWILLING to make 60+% of the throws that make any NFL offense run.

Can you show me where I said he was accurate or would be accurate on deeper passes? Not sure what argument you are attempting to make.

There is a version that the longer passes are not happening because the WRs are failing to get open.

Based on what I can see in the short passing game, there is a TON going wrong that has nothing to do with the WRs being open or not. I assume the exact same is happening in the deep game.

And because the QB knows he is no longer accurate and precise, he will NOT throw in between the hashes or into small windows. Therefore, he pumps and pulls it down while waiting to only take moonball shots along the sideline that minimize the chance of an INT. Additionally, this lack of faith in throwing ability and desire to avoid INTS at all costs has totally removed the intermediate passing game as well.

This creates a passing attack with like 4 routes in it. That is why it looks so bad. The end.
