With the way this game has started, seems we should have traded for an o-lineman.
I guess they're not sold on Spillane? Or are there concerns with Bush's knee?

Did avery Williamson not want to re-sign the team? Because otherwise they could have gotten the same quality at a cheaper price without giving up any draft capital

Schobert will make $7 million this season, according to Spotrac.com. But even if his contract says he has three years and 29.75 million remaining for 2022-24, the Steelers could get out of it next offseason by releasing Schobert without having to account for any “dead” cap money.

That seems like kind of a lot unless there’re thinking he challenges Spillane for a starting job.
We could have gotten Steven Nelson back for about half that.

Do you think they’ll rotate the two? Schobert is clearly better in coverage but he played in a 4-3 defense in Jacksonville. Now that Jacksonville is switching to a 3-4 they got rid of him. Not sure if it’s because of any deficiencies they saw in camp.

I like this:
Schobert made four starts as a rookie before breaking the Browns (https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/CLE/cleveland-browns/)' starting lineup in 2017, his second season. He received his first Pro Bowl nod that season after leading the NFL with 144 tackles.
Now just sign Steven Nelsen back so Sutton can go to slot CB.
Oh and unless our offensive line improves our defense is going to be gassed by halftime anyhow.

if memory serves the 80 million in cap space had been dwindled down to about 55 million with converting money into bonus's and voidable years on contracts pushing money down the road ...
its clearly a load up for one more shot with Ben
wish they had taken the same approach at corner thus far the secondary hasnt looked so hot

$55 million is about $60 million more than we usually have.
The thing is, so far, the money that Colbert & Khan have spent is equivalent to DeCastro’s salary. They could easily STILL make another move… and many are saying it’s coming (specifically, CJ Henderson is up for sale).

"After factoring in roster displacement, Schobert only lowers the Steelers current salary cap by $1.03 million"
"Schobert is due a base salary of $8.75 million in 2022, $10.25 million in 2023, and $10.75 million in 2024. "
"In a worst-case scenario where things wouldn’t work out between Schobert and the Steelers after the 2021 season, there is only $1.77 million in dead money should the two part ways"
Even if he sucks...paying Schobert $1 million in cap dollars for 2021? I would roll those dice 10/10 times.
Moving forward...the numbers are big but not totally unmanageable - assuming you no longer are carrying a massive QB contract.
How in the heck did this team spend an entire off-season falling backwards into guys they needed at $$$ they could manage? If you looked at the obvious holes in the Steelers roster right after the end of last season and I told you that they could have Ingram, Turner, and Schobert to fill some of those holes...I don't think anyone would have believed me.
Now...if they could get some safety depth for like a dollar or something...

Agreed. I think they will try something.
Honestly...if they want to "load up" and try and pass the Chiefs, Bills, Ravens, etc. in the AFC in Ben's final ride...another impact defender in the secondary is the shortest path to that goal.
Unfortunately, "another impact defender in the secondary" may be the most in demand thing in the NFL aside from QB.

Long story very short...there is far less actual usable cap room than the reports this week are indicating. How much less? That is the key question.

I realize this stuff probably gives you a headache trying to be accurate, but you know more about it than I do so your input is always appreciated.
My question is, how much does 2021 cap space really affect the TJ deal? Isn’t it mostly an extension with a lot of guaranteed money and a fat signing bonus that can be spread out to have minimal impact on the cap this year? Do you think an extension would affect his 2021 base salary all that much?

I think Watt counts about $10.5 million on the 2021 cap. A market rate extension for him is basically $30 million per year.Using the Joey Bosa deal as a benchmark (https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/joey-bosa-18951/) it looks like they need about 5-7 million in new money in 2021. In other words, to make the math reasonable over the life of the deal Watt's 2021 cap number has to be about $15-20 million.
So...I figure they need about $5 million of 2021 cap space to do the mega-extension with Watt. WHICH...coincidentally...is about what my back of the envelope math says they have remaining after all the other 2021 projected costs. Shocking...almost like this extension is as a good as done :). Honestly, both the Steelers and Watt know this is going to be the biggest non QB contract ever. My guess is any negotiation is not over the overall $$$ but the terms of when those get paid and who is more protected the team or the player.

Okay, so what I’m getting is that it is in the Steelers’ interest to take at least SOME cap hit in 2021 so that his base salary isn’t too high in other years. From TJ’s perspective, I don’t see why he’d care if it’s base salary or roster bonus or whatever the hell they want to call it for cap reasons, so long as the dollars are right.
I know the Steelers can be weird about the way they allocate guaranteed money in any contract that isn’t for a QB (which I believe was one of the impasses in the Bell negotiations). Will they make an exception to those rules for Watt, seeing as he is such a valuable player?

Typical Badgers LB under the current staff. Tough as nails. Fundamentally sound. Not flashy athlete. Finds a way to make plays.
Watt
Loudermilk
Schoebert
Steelers like Wisco defenders.

Colbert keeps giving Popcorn more and more...1st rounders and All Pros or Former All Pros at just about every position on Defense...
To get demolished by the likes of Jacksonville and the Stains in the playoffs...WHEN are the Coaches gonna start being held accountable?

I’m posting this here because it pertains to Schobert but it also applies to other acquisitions where we asked ourselves, how are we getting this player so easily? If it’s too good to be true, should we be worried?
Probably not. I never really compared all those situations and found the same common denominator: we took advantage of a first year head coach wanting “his guys” and not worrying about losing quality talent if they aren’t part of his plan.
