View Full Version : Report: Steelers eager to draft a running back in the first or second round

NFL teams have increasingly found that drafting a running back is a risky proposition, with highly drafted runners often proving to be no better than the backs available late in the draft or as undrafted free agents. But the Steelers apparently think they need to address the position early in this year’s draft.

I would hope so. Right now we would be going into the season with Benny Snell as the lead dog in the backfield.

They will draft OL and RB very early. They are not only doing it for next year but the year after when Ben is gone. They will need a running game to ease whoever replaces Ben's 40+ throws a game.
There are a lot of good RB's available this year.

At this point, I wouldn't really mind RB in round 1 given the current state just as long as they draft OL in day 2. Ideally though they address RB day 2 after OL. OT or C round 1 then RB round 2 is probably most ideal
Jup. Let’s announce to the world that we want a RB so that other teams can leap frog us and get the ones we want. This looks like a smoke screen to me.

unless of course, it's a double reverse smokescreen where we make people think it's a smokescreen but we actually do want a RB. :eyebrows:

We do want and will draft a RB. BUT, if teams jump us and take RBs in the first round, that leaves a ton of talent at other positions to choose from. Then there are more than a couple 2nd/3rd round RBs to draft.

my thoughts exactly. if the Dolphins take Harris and the Jets take ETN, that's pushing two very good players down the board to the Steelers. Win/win in my opinion...

Either 24 or wait till R3 and snag a guy like Sermon. I'm not crazy about the supposed tier 2 guys.

the old double secret smokescreen ... Maxwell Smart. Actually the Steelers are one of the few teams that could pull that off.

Duh. :noidea:
I also know that the Jaguars are going to take a QB. You know what, the Chargers are going to draft a LT or a CB. Hmmm, let me see... oh, the Ravens are going to draft a felon.
SUMMATION:
One does not need a Ouija board to make that proclamation.

I'm gonna go way out on a limb here:
the Jets and 49ers are also going to take QBs at #2 and 3.

well right now we have snell and mcfarland. One guy who's a change of pace #2 at best, and an unproven undersized RB. It's obvious that RB is on our draft board

Center and LT are just as important (probably more so ) than RB. Can get a good RB in the 3rd round or FA pickup.

Ideally they draft one in day 2 after an o-lineman but I'd rather draft one in round 1 than wait til day 3.

i am an old man that believes in old school. just having a weapon doesn't fix the problem. if you don't have the ability to use the weapon it does you no good.
draft o-line early. use the first 2 picks to help fix the o-line then draft a weapon later once you can use it.
i do believe part of the issue with the o-line last year was that their first step when run or pass blocking was to step backwards. that does absolutely nothing for a team that is wanting to have a power run game.
i feel get nasty up front and then what you have running the ball will look so much better.
