Tyson Alualu heading back to where it started, to the Jacksonville Jaguars
The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost another free agent, this time it is Tyson Alualu.
By Jeff.Hartman@BnGBlitz Updated Mar 16, 2021
The Pittsburgh Steelers knew they were going to have a difficult time retaining a number of their free agents; however, there was always hope the team would be able to find a way to keep several key members of the team.
After locking up Cam Sutton to a two-year deal on Day 1 of the NFL’s legal tampering period, the hope was the team would be able to retain a veteran player like Tyson Alualu. On Day 2 of the tampering period news broke Alualu would be going back to where his NFL career began with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
To make matters worse, when the news was released of Alualu’s contract, it certainly made it seem as if the Steelers could have tried to keep him if they felt there was still value there. As Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported, Alualu signed a two-year, $6 million dollar contract with the Jaguars.

He did nicely as a stop-gap after losing Hargrave... now we need to draft another Hargrave.

They couldn't resign him for at least a little more than 2 years $6 million?

He would be 34 years old by the time the season starts. 12 seasons in the NFL is a long time for an interior lineman. Just waiting to see the younger guy that will come in and replace him.

the Steelers must have confidence in Isaiah Buggs and Carlos Davis.
sorry, that's all I could come up with.

Glad they do ... I don't considering the clear void we witnessed when AluAlu went down

Mondeaux, Christian Barmore?
Mondeaux I believe is more of a DE.
but Christian Barmore does become a consideration now for us in the first round.

When Alualu went down, the run defense suffered noticeably.
Alas, when he returned, he was not the same player. My guess is that the Steelers feel that the player that they saw post-injury is what the player that they feel will show up to camp next year. "Father time is undefeated..."

maybe that is their logic but I would argue he was rushed back do to poor play by the guys we have left on the roster to compete to replace him ( pre draft atleast )
remember he was to be out like 2-4 weeks and was back in 2 and not at full strength

Good points
Counter-point: They cut VW to save a measly $3 million... so, they probably weren't going to bring back a 34 year old player for that same price.

true but if honest Vince had more players at his pos under contract that played quality snaps for less money
AluAlu did not , in fact when he was out he was missed ( and when unhealthy his healthy self was missed ) hopefully they have a plan better than mine

Danny Shelton was cut from the Lions today. could be a solid stop gap NT.

No doubt, but I fear he may be out of the team's price range.

I was hoping they could sign Alualu. Actually, I was kind of assuming the Steelers would resign him. But, I do understand. The injuries at linebacker took all the blame for the fall off of the defense last year. However, the play of the D'line really fell of last year. Heyward, who is still a good player, had some pretty poor games (by his standard) down the stretch (if my memory is correct Dallas comes to mind) . I'm sure some of decreased play down the stretch had to do with the screwed up schedule. Still, maybe the Steelers think they need to get younger at the position. Of course, they could have resigned Alualu and still found young talent. But, as others have said, it is early in the process.
They are going to have to do some work because Alualu and VW were two of the teams best run stuffers.

Yep, you beat me to this post. He clearly was not the same and will be 34 at the start of next season. This is why I didn't want JJ Watt either who is even younger. JJ has had bicep and back issues and has lots of miles on his body. This sport is brutal and unless you're name is Marcia Brady and the league doesn't allow you to be hit you take a beating.

Steelers can replace Tyson Alualu easier than you think
I really thought there was a solid chance that the Steelers would be able to retain Tyson Alualu at least for the 2021 season. However, the Jacksonville Jaguars apparently offered more than Pittsburgh was able to hand out at $3 million per season. Alualu proved to be a terrific signing by the Steelers back in 2017, and 2020 was arguably his best season with the team.
Though this loss stings a little bit, don’t make it out to be something bigger than it actually is. Despite his terrific grade from Pro Football Focus last season, Alualu is still just a situational, run-stuffing defensive lineman. He didn’t get an outrageous amount of pressure rushing the quarterback, and his production can easily be replaced (he recorded just 2.0 sacks and 4 tackles for a loss in 15 games).
While the Steelers may not have the answer at nose tackle currently on the roster, there are much bigger fish to fry, and nose tackle is only a part-time role as it is. Alualu was a very solid football player, but it would have been hard to offer him much more than the Jaguars did when he turns 34 in May. He will have a chance to finish his career with the team that drafted him 10th overall all the way back in 2010.

Goes back to his ex-wife. If it flops like it did the first time it’s entirely his fault.
