Houston Texans interview Steelers exec Omar Khan for GM position
Curt Popejoy
January 5, 2021
The Houston Texans announced on Monday they met with Pittsburgh Steelers vice president of football and business administration Omar Khan about their general manager vacancy.
Khan has been with the Steelers since 2001when he was named football administration coordinator. Khan held this title until 2011 when he was promoted to director of football administration and since 2016 has been the team’s vice president of football and business administration.
Losing Khan would be huge for the Steelers front office. He is the man who is known for his ability to sign and extend players keeping the salary cap in check and continuing to build competitive rosters. I’m not sure the Texans would be Khan’s dream job and I honestly had hoped he would be the one to take over for Kevin Colbert when he eventually stepped down as the Steelers general manager.

This seems to happen every year, like Dick Lebeau and Butler.
I was thinking about this the other day. I wonder if they would offer the GM Position to Tomlin if Khan moved on and Colbert retired after the 2021 draft? Colbert and Tomlin seem to work well together.

Not a fan of coaches being GMs and not a fan of hiring a coach and then hiring a GM.

They should interview Randy Fichtner for Head Coach. I bet somebody is gonna want the OC of a 12-4 team. :sarcasm2:

You mean they're not lining up trying to get their hands on him?
Fichtner has been playing it close to the vest. He's going to unleash some of the most innovative plays and dazzle us with superior play calling in the postseason. :chuckle:
I keep hoping that it's possible, but there is nothing about anything he has done to make me think he is going formulate a great game plan and implement it on the field to help elevate the team. I just don't get his thinking in so many situations. The way he keeps going back to plays that don't work over and over again is infuriating. Some of the stuff he runs when playing situational football plays right into the defense's hands. I gave him a pass last year with two backups with no NFL experience. After a full season watching his act, I am not a fan of how he crafts an offense and goes about his business. IMO, he doesn't put his players in a position to succeed. In many instances, they are having to overcome his influence on the game.

I think the best game plan he ever came up with was the first Bengals game in 2019. I know there was a lot of trickerations in that game but it worked. Samuels was 3/3 passing, ran for a td, and caught 8 passes. Actually a fun game to watch.

Khan is overdue for a GM position and honestly he deserves one

I tend to agree. Does the Rooney rule apply to GM's? On Khan, he tends ( Or Tomlin ) To let way overpaid past pro bowl guys hang around for 1-2 years too long.

It’s not Khan.
Even if Khan leaves, the Steelers would likely promote Brandon Hunt. He’s Colbert’s second in command (as far as scouting players goes). Don’t get me wrong: Khan is the best capologist in the NFL, and I would hate to lose him. But, as far as actual picks go, we’ll be fine with Hunt.

This could be Colbert's last year. He's been pretty good in the draft, though he has his share of misses. You could make a case for Colbert to make the Hall of fame. I would not write of Dan Rooney JR or Phil Kreidler (a very good scout and now College Scouting Coordinator ) from getting the GM job after Cobert leaves/retires.

Why would this be Colbert’s last season?
Also, what current GMs have less “misses” than Colbert?

I thought we had a thread on here about THIS being Colbert's last year. ???

I’ve only read that he’s returning for 2021. I believe there was a story that the Lions were after him and he declined that and said he was returning to the Steelers in 2021. Maybe not?

According to a brand-new report by Jason La Confora of CBS Sports, the Detroit Lions “covet” Kevin Colbert for their General Manager position, but at this point “the odds of him leaving Pittsburgh are beyond slim,” as he has already decided to return to the Steelers for another season. (La Confora says “an extension [with Pittsburgh] is a mere formality at this point.”)

I'm better than good with Colbert returning. I was thinking the last draft was his last draft for some reason. IDK.

Maybe this was the thread I was thinking of and just got things backwards. Sounds like me.

I, too, thought that Colbert was retiring. I am glad that he is staying... and happy that we have a quality replacement waiting in the wings.

Colbert and the team have said they are now going "year by year". So who knows when he hangs it up? I think he may hang around long enough to do an "Ozzie Newsome" - where you run one last draft that sets up your franchise for the next SB run.
I also think that the Steelers want to succeed Colbert with a combination of Hunt and Khan working in tandem. What Khan wants is the key to that working. Does he want or need to be the "GM" or is he content with a version of his current position?
Finally, changes to the Rooney Rule now state that "...teams must interview one external minority candidate for senior football operations and general manager jobs." (https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-instituting-changes-to-rooney-rule). So Khan may now become the sacrificial interview request so that teams can hire the candidate they already know they want. As the Texans just did.

Colbert is a quiet one off the field.
To save time on what this could be his last season:

I think overall Colbert has done a fine job. I even said he has a case for the hall of fame. If you want to nit pick, he can't draft DB's, and has some cap management issues. Some of his drat picks really make you wonder.

What a non-article. A lot of mights and maybes. Same as last year.

Not really, they mention Colbert has NOT be given a new contract, and it's about to expire. Colbert will be 64 year old this January.
2021 is not going to be an easy year from the Steelers, Hawkman. The team is up against the cap ( Negative cap space ) , with a ton of valuable free agents. Add in the mix, an aging and expensive Ben, and possibly Colbert's exit. I don't see Tomlin with a new deal either.
It's very likely the Steelers will have to hit the re-set button once Ben retires. I'm okay with that.

I guarantee to you, if Tomlin WANTS a new deal he will get a new deal.
