I thought the fact they put Dixon on IR gave them the spot they needed.

EDIT: I see they used the spot for McLendon. It will probably him again unless there is a rule against him going back to the practice squad.

The Steelers have requested and received a temporary roster exemption for Ben Roethlisberger today. They, however, do not know for how long – a week, two weeks?
Of course, they will not have it for the next game, Oct. 17, so they will have to get rid of someone in order to make room for BR. That someone almost surely will be Steve McLendon, the young backup nose tackle they signed from their practice squad over the weekend to back up Casey Hampton because of the knee injury to Chris Hoke..............

Any doubt how BR would be received today was quickly dispelled. The Steelers said they would welcome him with open arms and they did so, literally. Roethlisberger received hugs from Mike Wallace, Max Starks and Arnaz Battle as soon as they saw him, and many others came his way from office personnel, etc.
