View Full Version : Why isn't Derek Watt being used more often ?

It certainly would not have hurt getting him in the game.
21 Yards total rushing is absolutely pathetic !
Time to get Derek in the game more.

When he's in the game it's not that good

This week when he was used it wasn’t as a lead blocking FB. They have him doing other stuff.

I too would like to see Watt play more. He is a talented fullback. I was thinking why not, as a sub-package, use Watt and running back, along with two Wr's and Eric Eabron. You say why Ebron since he is a poor blocker? Well, you could still throw out of that package pretty well, while still having a better chance to run the ball. Ebron's droppsies aside he is still a mismatch for most defenders. We are going to live or die with our 4 and 5 receiver sets, but we need to diversify the offense.
I think there are a few problems to using Watt. First, Ben probably doesn't want to run an offense with a full back. Second, i'm not a football expert but I'm willing to believe that it is more complicated to effectively add a full back to the offense than most of us think. It probably changes the blocking schemes in the run game. Remember there were no ota's or mini camps. Watt was hurt for a number of weeks and covid rescheduling has killed practice time.
All that leads up to mostly having to stick with what you have been doing scheme and personnel wise.

I miss John L Williams. He could block, catch, and run. Too bad FB's are extinct.

The Steelers were 3-4 when Cowher added more John L Williams into the offense. Voila!... a Super Bowl appearance was the end result.
Really. I remember Cowher pointing that as the turning point in their season.

Kreider wasn’t bad either, until Arians got rid of him, saying, “we don’t use fullbacks”.

Tomlin answered that in his presser yesterday. Questions start at 7:20

Really. I remember Cowher pointing that as the turning point in their season. With most all teams going to Pass Happy Offenses, it's time to take advantage of this and bring back big, bruiser RBs/FBs.
Anyone got the Bus's # ?

They need something for short yardage why the hell not get a Watt involved?

Cause he's not John Kuhn, with him, we win 10 super bowls at least. Probably 15.

Maybe he is just not that good like the Edmunds brother RB.

Me too! We don't run the ball enough to need a FB. If Derek was a pass catching threat, that would be different.

Sure, we need help with running the football... in any capacity.
Watt was in there for the goal line attempts. He missed his block on a couple of those trys.
He was motioning from side to side, and Ebron missed a block when he motioned too far out as well.
Neither were effective.
So, maybe we need more power I-Formation to get him moving forward instead of sideways. :noidea:
I think the more sucessful "motions" earlier in the year were the jet sweeps with Claypool. Even as a fake.
Guess those aren't fooling anyone since the film is out.

Uhhh.....there is a chance Watt just isn't very good? Here are the Chargers rushing offense ranks (based on total rush yards) for the years he played for them: 26, 24, 15, and 28.

Right. So, if he's mediocre at blocking and not much of a recieving threat, his main purpose is on special teams... where he seems to be most efficient.
Which we have other guys on the roster for this very reason as well. ie, Dangerfield.
My point was maybe he'd be better running downhill instead of laterally to his blocks.

That makes sense. I guess I was just kinda questioning if the answer to the entire thread is pretty simple...Derek Watt is an above average special teams player but a mediocre FB. I don't think that inserting a mediocre FB into the line-up is going to "fix" much of anything. I mean, sure, why not try it? But it isn't like Watt is some sledgehammer just rotting away on the bench...again...no idea if I am right...just a thought.

Yep. It's probably why we already see so much more of Hawkins as the extra lineman in the power package.

Actually, when Nix was HEALTHY, he was pretty effective. And he was king on ST, but damn, the man couldn’t stay healthy. I loved the year when he had two yards of offense and two TDs.

And, maybe the Steelers are just as bad:
2019: 29th
2018: 31st
2017: 20th

Yup. It wasn't an argument that the team is fine or whatever as is. The offense is mediocre at best. I actually think it is being unmasked as a pretty poor offense that non-crappy defenses can stymie.
But I also, at the same time, argue that Watt isn't some magic key to running the ball. I think you and others mentioned it...Dotson might have more of an impact than Watt.
