What is your most frustrating play calls that we DON'T see too often with the Steelers?

For me, the lack of throwing to our Tight Ends. Remember a player that used to DESTROY our Defense named GRONKSKI ?

Why is Ben using them more ?

That and a lack of using a BIG BACK on short yard situations. Especially goal line stands. The Steelers have used the new kid on the block #99 Henry Mondeaux will success. Why not deploy more of this ?

It’s QB Sneak for me...first and foremost. I don’t get why they don’t use it when they have a decent o-line and a big QB that’s not easy to bring down...

Also, I’d like to see Ben under the center more. Just to give opposing teams different looks. I think they are in Shotgun almost 80% of the time (which quite a few teams are and it is successful) but I’d like to see Ben get under center for a little more creativity in the offense if that makes sense.

The reality of the evolution of football is that hardly anybody runs I formation (or split backs) from under center any longer, because the plays take too long to develop and the speed and quickness of front 7 defenders is much better than it was in the 1990's. Running an Ace formation from under center is pretty much a staple of inside or outside zone and you can still run that from pistol effectively.

If the QB is the most important part of your offense and protecting him from the pass rush is equally important, its pretty much an advantage in having him 5 or 6 yards deep getting a snap from pistol, rather than under center. It gives the QB a better pre snap point of view of the defense and if you can still run or pass from that formation, it really isnt worth putting your QB under center, when a defense is going quickly check to an A-gap(s) blitz to get at your 37 year old QB as fast as they can.

I mean if your handing to James Conner from a shotgun formation, you’re giving up your play much quicker and giving more reaction time to the defense. I think there’s a place for either and/or both. I mean Brady and Brees were under center over 50% of the time in 2019 and that worked out pretty well. I think Goff was under center for over 60% if I remember correctly in 2018 and Gurley ran for 1200 yards or something like that.

I was saying that you rarely see I formation or Split formation offenses from under center because they take longer for the back to get to the LOS and the other disadvantage is your QB has his back to the defense to not see blitz or coverages if play action.

Even last night, Tannehill ran a play action from under center and when the DE handled his contain responsibility, it ended up in a 12 yard loss. Now if you run pistol, ace back and play action, the QB can read the end as well as read his receivers and the coverage when he is putting the ball in the RB's gut and pulling it back for the pass.

This isnt a run heavy offensive system like some of the others you mentioned, so I dont expect to see a lot more of snaps from under center as the play action motion isnt as impactful. Fichtner likes to abandon the run and I think Ben likes to be deeper in the backfield with his eyes up, rather than close to the LOS with his back to the rush.

Oh my, How about play action? Where is it? And more screens.

Take out these plays ASAP. Deep to Johnson. Conner running wide outside the tackles. Neither work.

For McFarland, a counter play or weak side pitch would probably work. Dude accelerates like a drag racer.

I’m just saying that I’d like to see the formation a little more so that when they come to the LOS on 4th and short, they maybe run the ball on a dive, QB Sneak it or opt for some other play rather than knowing with about a 95% certainty that Ben is just trying to draw the opponent offsides. They did run a few plays in the Cowboys game from under center, one being a DJ sweep that could’ve gotten major yardage had the team blocked properly.

By no means am I saying abandon the shotgun...it’s what Ben does best. Just looking for more QB sneaks (and maybe other options from under center) in short yardage situations.
