View Full Version : Cowboys (obviously) regret taking Taco Charlton over T.J. Watt

In every draft, every team has a regret (or two or three).

Some are bigger than others. Some are harder to explain than others.

Take the 2017 draft. Everyone knew the Cowboys would take a pass rusher after Benson Mayowa led them with six sacks in 2016. It was just a matter of which one.

When their turn came, at 28th overall, the Cowboys had the choice of Michigan’s Taco Charlton or Wisconsin’s T.J. Watt.

It seems like a no-brainer now, but the Cowboys selected Charlton and the Steelers chose Watt two picks later.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones admitted regret Friday.

“Absolutely,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “You always do that, if you’re truthful and you’re honest – what you might could have had.”

Crygirls were about to take Shazier but the Steelers were the pick before them.

They were very close to having Shazier and TJ on their team

Yup, that Cowboys front office casts a large shadow over that of the Steelers. Some serious shade.

I was hoping for the Steelers to draft TJ that year, but I thought the Cowboys would take him. When they passed I thought Green Bay would then draft him right before Steelers picked. Needless to say, everything worked out nicely !

I can't believe TJ went so late. I mean pedigree alone I thought would have gotten him selected earlier.

There is a reason for the disparity in the two team's records. Passing on TJ when they could have had him sort of sums it all up right there.

30th pick, a ton of teams passed on him. I bet if there was a do-over he's easily top 10.

You can say a lot about many Steelers' draft picks that were even picked in later rounds. Kevin Colbert knows his shit.

Rod Marinelli the DC for the Cowboys at the time really wanted Taco and convinced everyone to take him over TJ. Not surprising that Marinelli is the only HC to coach a 0-16 team

Only HC with Hue Jackson and maybe Adam Gase after this year!
