The Patriots have agreed to sign Cam Newton (https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/N/NewtCa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-), according to Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com (on Twitter (https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1277389885012312064)). It’s a one-year deal that could be worth as much as $7.5MM, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link (https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1277391396140462081)) adds. The base portion is believed to be much lower, however, and Newton likely didn’t receive much in the way of guarantees.

But seriously, what a crazy 4 team scenario.

Newton to Cheats***
Marsha to Bucs
Jameis to Saints
Teddy to Panthers

Rinse and repeat.

Wut?

Saviest part of this is that Newton is a steal at that contract AND 16 minutes after the NFL slaps them around, they announce this.

A move worthy of Carville.

Yeah, I didn't think of that.

The crazy thing about all this is that I don't see how they can have a season? I want them to play, but how can they?

It isn't going to happen. I figure all major American sports are going to end up in courts with major battles between ownership and the unions over:

1. Wages for cancelled or aborted seasons. Players will want them. Ownership will refuse.
2. Veteran and free agent contract statuses. If you were scheduled to be a FA after the 2020 season in your sport, but your league didn't really play, are you still a FA or still under contract? If your league didn't play does it still count as year/season towards veteran status stuff and pension and etc...etc...

By late September even without government orders of any kind, most people living in population centers will have pulled back (again) from public interactions and group based locations. Very small chance that you can compel athletes to do what most others will not be willing to do.

Well since they only have $5 million in cap space (https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/cap/) and have yet to sign their entire draft class, carve out their typical in-season contingency fund of $3-5 million (side note -- I would argue you better have a bigger contingency fund this season as you may have to cycle players on and off the roster more due to the pandemic), and get a few other contract issues taken care of -- I suspect that the didn't "miss" anything. It was more that they were not even participating.

So it's all about staying in the news.

Partly that and hope the decision gets taken out of their hands. The NFL didn't cancel the season the Feds/States/Union did.

The NFL should leave it with plans to play and if the players choose not to play, then either they don't get paid *or* the season doesn't count towards time served.
