Gay thrives in nickel role
By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, October 3, 2010

After starting 14 games at cornerback in 2009, William Gay has had to accept a reduced role this season.

That hasn't stopped the fourth-year veteran, who was supplanted in the starting lineup by Bryant McFadden, from carving out a valuable role as an extra defensive back in passing situations.

Gay, the Steelers' nickel back, has eight tackles and a sack and been credited with one pass defended. He also is tied for third on the team in special teams tackles (3).

Never thought he should've been a full time starter...not at the point in his career where they attempted to make him one. He's a great nickel back...obviously.

I always liked the comparison of him to Townsend. Give him 4-5 years playing nickel and maybe he becomes a starter. If not, he's got a solid career as the #3 cb on the team.

This thread title made me laugh.

It'd be funnier if that wasn't his last name.

Then it would be a Flacco article.

After last season and how horrible Gay played it sure is great to see him playing well and playing the Nickel package well!
