Wanted to start this Monday off with a video and a refresher for the excitement that surrounded then-rookie linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III. His 2019 campaign quietly ended after landing on IR with a back injury but prior to that, he had done everything possible to make an impact.

We look at six plays from the preseason to show his potential and why I have confidence in him as the team’s #3 inside linebacker in 2020.
As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments below. I have a new headset so hopefully the audio quality is better than before. If you can’t see the video, disable your adblocker, refresh the page, and give it a few seconds to load in.

The backup safety is a huge concern, same for the NT ... But much less for the backup ILB even if it's unknown right now

I don’t feel like NT is a giant concern. With the three guys they have there, I think a nice rotation may surprise a lot of people.

As for Grant. Loved watching him last preseason. Thought he showed a lot of promise during the Reps that he had.

So several years back when the 3-4 was a bit more popular than it is now and when almost every "flavor" of the 3-4 involved a NT whose primary job was to anchor the middle, occupy blockers, and stuff the run - a really popular way to get pretty good NTs was to find a late career 4-3 pass rushing DT or a bigger rush DE that was kinda slowing down in their "juice" at the pass rush but still could otherwise play DL pretty well. Then you kicked them inside to 3-4 NT and called it a day. There were several 1st-3rd round guys who extended their careers that way.

Kinda sounds like someone on the current Steelers roster a little bit...

I am sure Casey Hampton can get right off the couch and play in case it doesn't work out.

I’m not sure Casey Hampton can get off the couch to get himself a beer at this point in life.

Are you meaning Alualu or Wormley here? Maybe both?

Alualu. High draft pick. Never really was or no longer is a "pass rusher" -- so he reorients his game to being a run stopping NT.

How did a thread about UG3 turn into a NT discussion?

All threads are going to turn in to NT discussions. It will be like offensive line years ago. Should be fun!

What I got from this discussion is that Ulysees Gilbert III is going to make one hell of a Nose Tackle.

Good grief. You people can’t help but derail threads can you!?! SMFH

Back on topic... why does our new starting NT sleep so much? Does he have narcolepsy??? Typical Tomlin player.

It’s because the Rooneys are too cheap to pay a real NT!

I can't wait to see Gilbert completely healthy. I honestly didn't know that he suffered a fractured vertabra, and is an issue he probably had since college.
