Drew Brees is signing with NBC Sports over ESPN in a move that will make him a fixture on NFL telecasts after he finishes playing, The Post has learned.
In a contract that will begin after Brees retires from the Saints, the 41-year-old will be groomed as the potential replacement for Cris Collinsworth on “Sunday Night Football,” according to sources.
“Like all NFL fans, we look forward to watching Drew continue his Hall of Fame career this fall, and we are confident his post-playing career will be just as successful,” NBC Sports spokesman Greg Hughes told The Post.
NBC already has a succession plan for Collinsworth’s SNF partner, Al Michaels. After the 2022 Super Bowl, Mike Tirico is going to take over full-time for Michaels.

Smart move. ESPN is horrendous...their MNF is probably the worst production (of any sport) out there.

Are they pushing Michaels and Collinsworth out the door or are they retiring? Voluntarily...???

I think when NBC signed Tirico he was the centerpiece and groomed to take over, like Al Michaels was for so many years on ABC/NBC. Football, Olympics, Studio host etc.

They want Brees to be the next Romo so we'll see how that goes. I'm not a Tirico fan but I like Brees.

Tirico's voice is synonymous with ESPN...so they'll have some work to do IMO to make him the next Big Al.

Michaels is way better than Tirico.

Agree. That’s why I was asking if he retired or they forced him out or just opted not to renew...

So true and that's a shame because it wasn't always this way. Used to look forward to Monday night games. I think ABC did a much better job back in the day.

It has changed since 2006 since the best games are now in the SNF ... Before it was the monday night which had the best games

But no excuse for having put the Bengals and the Dolphins against the steelers in the MNF last year when we knew before the season that the Bengals and the Dolphins were going to be horrible ... The Ravens were available in addition.

MNF used to also be one of the few times you’d be able to watch certain teams. People would get excited because “their team” would be on MNF. Now that it’s been watered down with SNF, TNF, Three games on Thanksgiving, Saturday games, etc it’s not special anymore. It’s lost it’s luster. It’s not so much the matchups anymore either. They could have 13-0 Pats and 13-0 Steelers on Monday Night and unless you’re a Pats fan or a Steelers fan, overall NFL fan or a fantasy football fan that may have players in that game, people don’t care anymore.

Great point

In the past, it was an honor to play in the MNF (before 2006) but since 2006 it's got worse and worse and it's even worse since 2012 when the NFL have a TNF game every week .... When you play 2 games in the MNF, it's almost an insult now especially when this is against teams like the Bengals or the Dolphins ... The steelers also played 2 MNF games in 2014 and it was against the Texans (2-14 the year before) and the titans (2-14 in 2014) ... Awful and insulting!
