Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, 41, is among five people killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, a source confirmed to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The crash comes one day after Bryant was passed by Lakers forward LeBron James for third place on the NBA's all-time scoring list. As late as 10:39 p.m. ET on Saturday night, Bryant was active on social media, congratulating Bryant on Twitter during the Lakers 108-91 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

James inscribed his sneakers with "Mamba 4 Life" and "8/24 KB" in gold marker before the game, showing respect for Bryant, an 18-time All-Star with the Lakers who is eligible for the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020. All week, in the lead-up to the milestone, he was quick to laud Bryant.

It was odd in Twitter, because people were joking about LeBron passing Kobe on the all-time scoring list. Then, suddenly everyone was like: NOT FUNNY.

I was like  then I was like :scared:

They were on their way to a travel basketball game. Kobe and his 13-year old daughter, another player and parent. Tragic!!!

I was never a Kobe fan since my team is the Spurs, but I did respect what he brought to the game.

RIP Kobe

Same here but I"m a Sixers fan. Kobe was a fierce competitor and was one of the greats of all time. Much respect to him.
RIP Kobe, Gigi and everyone on the helicopter.

Not a basketball fan but this was definitely tragic news for the sports world in general.
Thoughts and prayers to all the families left behind.

Latest reports are that the Staples Center is not big enough to hold a public vigil for Bryant. They’ve even gone so far as to say the LA Coliseum, that holds 80,000 will not be big enough...

Kobe was great. His death was tragic. But, people are starting to equate this with the death of JFK, MLK, and Jesus Christ.
