so why do the naysayers complain about drafting a proven player in fitzpatrick, no matter if mason is a bust or not, they weren`t drafting a first round qb anyway ?

Two of those three first round quarterbacks have gotten the Steelers six Super Bowl titles.

Sorry, Mason is going to have to EARN his praise and respect. And I mean EARN it. Let's see how he goes.

And as I pointed out in another thread, there would have to be an awesome QB available to draft next year. I don't know who that might be, or even if he exists.

I don't think that QB exists in this draft. This certainly isn't a 'Suck for Luck' type season like Indy stumbled into a few years ago. Of the top prospects, Tua, Herbert, and maybe Fromm - Fromm is the only one I really like out of that group that I think succeeds at the next level. There's no saying that Rudolph might not be a better pro than all of them.

So if Miami can't 'Suck for Luck' this year, at least they can 'Bomb for Fromm' :chuckle:

Relax guys, Neil O'Donnell and Bubby Brister were 3rd round picks. We'll be OK :chuckle:

Yep. Malone was quite terrible.

Plus the Steelers gave away Johnny Unitas and passed on Dan Marino. nobody is perfect.

Ok so we don't get a QB, with a high pick we could still obtain a stud defender (the best safety in the draft, a stud game-changing edge rusher, the best corner in the draft). Top 10 picks are valuable commodities. If you trade one for a player, you BETTER be getting some all-pro stud in his prime

We just did get the best safety in the draft (from 2018). In fact, if Colbert's judgement is correct wrt Edmunds, we got the two best safeties in the draft - in the position of greatest weakness on defense.

More like we traded for someone who at most was worth a 2nd round pick trading for. Was any other team offering their 1st? Maybe I could see a team in danger of missing the playoffs trading for a 2nd year player 18 games in if it is Lawrence Taylor in 1982, or Randy Moss in 1999. Other than that though. How was his rookie year even? Was his tape through 18 games even worth a 2nd or did Kevin Colbert just want to be bold and shut up all the people who complain about the Steelers not making rash decisions in the name of being bold because they think that's what wins Super Bowl. Plus I'm pretty sure as rookie safeties last year go, Derwin James ran circles around him

Oh jeez, how’d I forget about James? I was thinking Edmunds was the 2nd safety off the board. Edmunds couldn’t hold James’ jockstrap.

when Ben went down i would've gladly taken either one to fill in for the season. Now after Mason's performance against the seahawks, i think i would actually rather roll with him for the season, i'm guessing he'll be better.

On the topic of safeties from the 2018 draft...

Derwin Janes dropping to 17 is karma. The Chargers should have drafted Polamalu, but traded back. The football Gods sent them the bigger version.

Jessie Bates is regarded as the worst starting safety in the league. Dodged a bullet with that one.

I still liked Justin Reid (we had no shot at acquiring James). He’s playing very well.

Terrell Edmunds’s college coach considered Edmunds to be the BEST player on VaTech’s team. Better than his brother. And, that coach knows defense.

As much as these 2 guys were the butt of jokes, O'Donnell was a good QB, he was good enough to take us to the SB before his epic choke job (or getting paid off). Brister I thought had the talent, just not the weapons. Outside of Lipps there was literally nobody, I think in 1990 Merril Hoge was his #2 receiver and he was the fullback.

But here's to hope that Mason is better than either of them. But I agree after Ben went down I would have gladly taken an O'Donnell or Brister to take the reigns :chuckle:

I think you will find the next HC is given the opportunity to draft his own QB unless Rudy really pans out. They have only had 3 HCs since 1969 which is an amazing record similar to the 1979 Steelers which were comprised entirely of their own draft picks. Although they are not SB victories the team's steadfast philosophy may have helped contribute to a few trophies and are records that may never be broken.

And as I pointed out in that same thread, it's not about a QB being available next year. Teams will trade first round picks to move up in the first round. They'll trade first and third round picks to move up. If we're high enough, they'll trade first and second round picks or even two first round picks to move up. Then, we have picks in the bank for the following year to move up if when that QB is there to be drafted.

How often do the Steelers make moves like that though? Dropping back to compile picks?

In 50 years the Steelers have not traded away their 1st round pick. Colbert is pulling some surprises and maybe he’s not done. On The Terrible Podcast there was a discussion about the possibility of a Hargrave trade before the deadline to a team in contention needing one more piece for that playoff push.(only if Steelers are out already) Either that or he walks for free this offseason anyway.

If the Steelers free fall this season and end up with a top5-10 draft pick that now goes to the Dolphins I’m ok with that. I don’t believe we get anything better than Fitzpatrick out of this draft anyway. The QB class is predicted better in 2021, safety would still be the bigger need, a productive OLB/TE/WR can definitely be found in round 2-4.

This is going to be a fun roller coaster ride of a season. Hang on Steelers fans.

Technically they do. He's playing free safety tomorrow. And hopefully for three more seasons after that.

I believe thats the plan. Ben comes back and helms the offense. A defense led by Watt, Tuitt, Bush, and Fitzpatrick backs him up.

ABs cap charge is gone. No money towards a safety. Lots of cap dollars to add accessory pieces.

Make a run in 2020 and 2021. After that, who knows? Likely a bigger rebuild.
