View Full Version : Your confidence level on Chris Boswell right now

Boswell was one of the best kickers in the NFL from 2015 to 2017, he was amazing in the clutch (15-15 in the playoffs in his career and 4 game winning field goal in the last 8 games in 2017) but last year he was so bad that his job was on the hot seat. But in preseason, even if Boswell had no many opportunity, especially in the last 2 games, his FG(or XP) was in the middle almost every time, which is a great sign.

So imagine a scenario that in week 1 in New England, the Steelers trail by one point with 3 seconds left in the game and Boswell need to make a 45 yards FG to win the game

On 0 at 10 (0 is the lowest, 10 is the highest) what would be your level of confidence to see Boswell make this FG?

I think his injury or injuries last year affected him in a very negative way. A kicker's motion in some ways is like a golf swing. When you are hurt, it really has an impact on your swing and timing, and your game suffers. I believe he is healthier, and he will kick better. I'm not betting my retirement on that, but I have a feeling he'll be fine this year.

I'm going to say I have a confidence rating of about 8.

We'll find out very soon.

That and I think he had lost confidence after his missed clutch FG in Cleveland in overtime in week 1

I'm still more confident about him this year than if the Steelers would have the same kicker that the Bears right now! ... Their kicking situation in Chicago is a laughing stock right now!

Great thread!

I'd say I have a confidence rating of about a 5. Give me a couple good weeks and that'll rise dramatically!!

Man, "confidence" is the wrong word to use there. I have a 100% certainty that he can make that kick, but no idea if he would or not. I'd be covering my eyes and crossing my fingers.

Not very good outside of 43 yards. Boswell will need several weeks of converting ALL extra points and everything inside of 40 yards before I feel good about him being our kicker again.

This. I think Boswell got his confidence back. He was drilling everything right down the middle in preseason that I saw.

About a 4. Boswell is saying and doing all the right things now, but I'm just waiting for the yips to start and the wheels to come off the next time Harbaugh freezes him in Baltimore.

If this is not Harbaugh,it will be Belichick in week 1 in the last possible second!

Sounds like you are hoping for this.

No - I just envision it happening. Boswell was absolute money for 3 years. Every time he lined up from within 45 yards, he'd bisect the uprights. Then ... the wheels fell off. You could see after missing one left, he'd over-compensate and miss the next one right. He started questioning his mechanics and not trusting them.

If he can truly bounce back from that and be the ice-cold killer he was from 2015-17, then he's a much tougher S.O.B. than I. But once that doubt creeps in your mind once, it's awfully damn hard to keep it fully boxed out afterwards. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm afraid I won't be.

Neverous as hell.

That’s probably a typo, but I’m loving the word “neverous” in context here. It really captures the appropriate emotions.

No.

But that's not a knock on him. Trust is just hard to rebuild. I want to see him be consistent for a few more games. (And, i want to see him miss one or two, and then come back and nail a bunch. how he performs after his first miss is going to be the real test).

This, from a previous thread, was my response a month ago. Since then, he's missed one kick. A long one that pushed off just a bit. Then, he came back and nailed a few more.

Right now, confidence level is about a 7.5 out of 10. That's really high for me right now. He'll have to go through the rest of the season 100 percent on extra points and easy to medium hard field-goals (say, 45 yards or less).

I’d pit him at an 8-9 at the moment. He’s been money so far...knock on wood.

Glad to see his comeback so far this season

Still waiting for an inside 2 minutes kick to tie or win a game to be confident he is all the way back.

Those were the ones he consistently made in 2017 and was missing in 2018

Confidence level 7/10 after being at zero by last November

I'm about an 8. I still some of his kicks slicing right a bit, where you'll see him try to compensate to the left on the following kick. That little bit of tailing motion still puts me on edge a bit.

If you look at Justin Tucker, his kicks are ramrod straight. Every time. In Boz's defense, the 51-yarder he drilled at the end of the first half looked like a Tucker kick. Dead-straight, zero tailing motion, bisected the uprights.

We are good at two things: making splash plays on defense and kicking field goals.

In Boswell I trust.

If we had this version of him last year we’d have been a Super Bowl contender.

100% in making field goals inside of 45 yards. Yes he was awful last season, but to pull a quote from a movie, he can be my wing man anytime.

I wish he was bit better on kickoffs and had slightly more range, but he's back to being a top kicker.
