Among the cuts are two 2019 draft picks, sixth rounder Sutton Smith and seventh rounder Derwin Grey, as well as Marcus Allen, a fifth-round pick in 2018. The team also released veteran receiver Eli Rogers.

On offense the team released quarterback Devlin Hodges, running backs Trey Edmunds, Travon McMillian and Malik Williams, receivers Trey Griffey, Johnny Holton, Tevin Jones, Brandon Reilly, Eli Rogers and Diontae Spencer, and tight ends Micky Crum, Kevin Rader, Christian Scotland-Williamson and Trevor Wood. On the offensive line Garrett Brumfield, Derwin Gray, J.C. Hassanauer, Patrick Morris and Damian Prince were released.

Defensively the team let go of defensive backs Marcus Allen, Dravon Askew-Henry, Marcelis Branch, Jhvonte Dean, P.J. Locke and Trevon Mathis, linebackers Jayrone Elliott, Christian Kuntz, Tegray Scales, Sutton Smith and Robert Spillane, and defensive linemen Winston Craig, Greg Gilmore, Henry Mondeaux, Casey Sayles and Conor Sheehy.

In the battle for kicker and punter, the incumbents won out, with Matthew Wright and Ian Berryman both being released.

Holton, Rogers and Spencer got cut. Thought I’d see at least one of them on the roster...Spencer and/or Holton to the PS? Rogers possibly a re-sign after an IR move?

Sometimes things can change very quickly ... JuJu Smith Schuster is the only WR of the Steelers who was in the roster in 2017.

Wow. I predicted Rogers would be cut, but I figured it would be to keep Holton, or maybe even Spencer.

I love that they found a way to keep 2Pac, but it never would have occurred to me that they’d accomplish it by only keeping 5 WRs. That was a very creative move that I could not have forseen.

I’m sure they aren’t done moving pieces around. The most likely move is that they move Layne to IR with the possibility of return. They had to initially keep him on the 53 to make it possible to bring him back this year. Once they do that they can re sign the 6th WR (probably Holton). I guess they figure he’ll clear waivers.

For some reason I thought Marcus Allen would make the team. But I guess he’s still PS eligible and they figure he’s safe there for now.

I thought Holton’s big plays might push Switzer off the team.
Guessing his punt returner experience was the difference.
Happy both unknown LB’s made the 53. They deserved it by their play. Tomlin watched the tapes. :yup:
No way Snell was going to be cut based on where he was drafted. Layne the same.
Kelly could turn out to be a nice addition to the secondary.
Practice squad should have some decent emergency talent.
Overall, from top to bottom I think the talent level is better.
:noidea:

If I was the Colts I would be on the phone now with Hodges agent if he actually has one. Or put in a bid for him or however it works.

I'd say the hugest win is getting through it without losing any of our starters with season-ending injuries. The only three that aren't 100 percent of the starters are Dupree, Haden, and Sean Davis. Haden declared himself 90 something percent ready. Dupree just has a strained thumb so he'll cast or splint it and go play. Since we're not really dependent on him for INTs, it won't be that much of a hindrance (barring a missed tackle because he couldn't grab a jersey or something). So, Davis with a high ankle sprain is the only real concern and even that may be just a light sprain. Of course, it could persist if it's worse, but here's hoping not.

I really don’t understand the obsession with Hodges. He was a nice story, but he was the 4th best QB on the team. Does anyone really fear a day will come when we really miss having Hodges on the roster? What does a day like that even look like?

The day when Hodges would have been our best option is a day when we’re fucked.

Imo he out played Dobbs this preseason, so was he really the 4th best QB on this team ? Far as I'm concern the more depth and talent on the roster the better. Also would not be surprised if he has a better NFL career then Dobbs.By the way I like Dobbs and was rooting for him to beat Landry last year and thought he deserved being the 2 last year.

Apparently his 20 of 38 for 190yds, 2TD 1 INT in the preseason is Tom Brady-esque. I really don't see it and am not shocked he was the 4th QB.

But really....should I be caring about who the #3 -4 QB is ?

But really....should I be caring about who the #3 -4 QB is ? Rudolph shine but Dobbs just got worse. Sorry but you think he would have kept getting better in his third year. Guess you could just flip a coin with Dobbs and Brister but think Hodges has more upside.

JimHarbaugh'ssoakedtissue
08-31-2019, 11:36 PM
My argument for Hodges is having him on the team the next couple years in case Rudolph is not Ben's future backup. Not to rely on him this year in a game. If he makes the practice squad then the Steelers made the right decision and I'm happy with it as well.

Instead of 5 WRs, I probably would have cut Gentry and gone with 2 TEs, 6 WRs. Gentry does not look like an NFL player to me right now and could use a year on the practice squad. We tend to use an OT as the #3 TE on goalline situations anyway.

I'am also surprised to see Dan McCullers still hanging around.

Agreed, Spencer showed enough in the return game and is good for somebody needing a player with his speed inside. Was hoping they could end up with him back, but it may be Holton the Steelers are planning on.

Trade a 4-6th round pick for a TE. Fred Johbson goes to PS. Or Gentry to PS.

Agreed about Holton. Makes sense, Layne is not ready, he'll have a redshirt season.

Would you trade a 4th for Mike Gesicki from Miami and hope the lack of production is due to (lack of)QB talent? I was high on him coming out of Penn State last year. It's risky but he could be a steal.

(I'm saying this not knowing if he is available or not, they did just trade their starting left tackle though)

I did not think about that, but with the way he said that,it's very likely!

Probably not a major move, but just a TE that is an NFL caliber player ... I do not think this TE will help us in the first month, since it will not have been long with the team to learn the playbook and have a chemistry with Ben, but later in the season he could help us later in the season

But yes, I see it being one of the tight ends that were released in Luke Wilson or Leggett if they go that direction.

I'm not sure how he has developed as a blocker since coming into the NFL, was a work in progress coming out of Penn State. He was much more of a receiving threat than Gentry was at Michigan, wouldn't compare those two.

Had a total of 15 TD's in college, 9 of those his senior year.
