Since 2000, the Steelers have been winning over 70% of their game(52-22)when their turnovers differenciel is at 0(by far the best in the NFL) .... They even have a winning record (28-23-1) when they are at -1 ... Only the Pats have a better record than the steelers in this situation and no other team have a winning record at -1.

But his stats do not surprise me, since the steelers have almost always dominated their opponent for the yards ... They do not need to have a crazy turnovers ratio to win ... Just need not be bad in turnovers and Steelers will win a lot of game.

That is a really incredible stat. I think the Steelers need to get to about +4 to +10 in turnovers to put themselves in the best position to make a deep playoff run. NFL offenses can move the ball and score on anyone at this point. You need to limit possessions more than stop people on defense.

Very few exceptions to the correlation between turnover margin an SB appearances. The Denver Broncos is kinda unbelievable that they made it and won at -4!

I understand that. But when you can not consistently get on the positive side of the turnover margin, you leave your team zero room for error. One wrong decision, one bad bounce, etc can lead to a defeat. Offense is far ahead of defense in the NFL right now. Turnovers are the only thing that defense can do that are a guaranteed way of not only stopping the other team from putting points on the board but providing your team another chance for your offense to light up a defense.

Everyone wonders why the Steelers struggle against "bad" teams or don't put teams "away" or never win a blow-out. It is because they turn the ball over on offense and fail to generate turnovers on defense. Do that and you will start increasing your margin of victory and putting teams away.

Clearly, as the stats that PB posted demonstrate, the Steelers can and have been beating teams without a great deal of turnovers, but what has the margin of victory been in those games? I bet this team has won more close games than the majority of the league. That just isn't sustainable or easy.

ANd I think your point that turnovers are not the only important thing is good as well. It is a balance between the two. You mentioned previous Packers teams that seemedto have great defenses but it was all built on getting a ton of turnovers, which they couldn't sustain.

And also the years that the Saints won the super bowl(2009) they had a crazy number of the turnover but they never repeated that, even if they had the same DC the next two years...Yeah it take balance.

And I read a lot of Alex Kozora info on twitter on the training camp and the steelers have several tipped pass in the training camp ... Much more than in the past in the training camp .... Some players of the defense have also talked about the importance of having more tipped pass, so maybe it's not a fluke that several passes are tipped in the training camp and this is a great thing they are working on that.
