View Full Version : Mike Tomlin: Devin Bush ‘Has A Lot To Learn…A Lot To Prove’
polamalubeast

You may recall that a few months ago the Pittsburgh Steelers made one of the boldest moves of the offseason when they traded up 10 spots in the first round to draft Devin Bush with the 10th-overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. It was the first trade up in the first round the team has made under Head Coach Mike Tomlin over 13 drafts.
They gave up their first- and second-round picks in 2019, plus a third-round pick in 2020, in order to acquire that 10th-overall pick, certainly a price they are not often willing to pay, but they saw in Bush a special player at a position they needed, and they coveted him.
That doesn’t mean they’re going to hand him anything other than an opportunity. It is true that he spent the spring rotating with the first-team defense along with Vince Williams and free agent Mark Barron, but if he is going to start, he is going to have to earn it.
Tomlin was asked about Bush when he spoke to reporters yesterday at the outset of training camp, specifically about what comes next for him, and the veteran head coach pumped the brakes a bit, telling them that “he has a lot to learn. He has a lot to prove”.
While that may well be the case, the reality is that he was given a lot of first-team reps, and he was even granted the opportunity to spend a lot of time calling the defense while playing with the starters, something that not even Ryan Shazier did from the outset.

Does he really have a lot to “prove”? I feel like there has to be some sort of baseline first...no?
Artie Burns has a lot to prove. Bud Dupree has a lot to prove...or maybe those two just proved they can’t do it? You could even say with AB gone that the offense in general has a lot to prove. Ben, JuJu...both have a lot to prove?

Coach speak nonsense. What was he going to say? This early in the ramp up to the season, coaches have to pretend that its all on the table still. Even though Watt was the starter, they still waited and pretended that they were not certain Watt would be starting.

At the first practice in 2017, Watt was already a starter..Even Tomlin had said that Watt was a starter since day zero!
Today it's Barron and Williams who started as number 1 .... I think that's going to change, but for now Bush is not a lock as starter in week 1 as Watt was in 2017.

Which Steelers impressed in the first practice in full pads?
Devin Bush had been hearing about this day from the time he was drafted by the Steelers in April. Sure, Bush went through a month’s worth of practices in the spring, but those practices were light, or as coach Mike Tomlin refers to them, “football in shorts.”
On Sunday, after two light practices without pads to open training camp, the Steelers got to play real football for the first time in seven months. And all eyes were on Bush, the 5-foot-11, 234-pound inside linebacker, who was selected with the No. 10 overall pick in the draft.
“He looked good,” defensive coordinator Keith Butler said. “It’s what we expect out of him. He’s still learning. He made a couple mistakes here and there, but he’s a sharp kid. The good thing about him I think he’s going to be very coachable in terms of not making the same mistake twice. Most of the time those guys turn out to be good players.”
Bush played every snap with the first-team defense alongside veteran Vince Williams during the team periods. Veteran Mark Barron, who was signed to a two-year, $12 million contract in March, was given the day off.
Bush didn’t flash with any spectacular plays Sunday afternoon. He made a few tackles, but he also dropped an interception during the final team period. The Steelers believe the impact plays that made him one of the top linebackers prospects in his draft class will come in due time. They feel that way because he’s been so astute in the classroom and on the field with his ability to communicate and learn the defense.

Devin Bush embraces the pressure of his role
The Steelers drafted Devin Bush to replace a great player who has become an inspirational figure.
They also gave up a bunch of stuff to get him/
So the rookie linebacker knows the expectations of him will be high, and that he has a lot to prove.
“That I belong in this league,” Bush said, via Jarrett Bell of USA Today. “That I was the right choice for this team. To give up that many picks and put that many high hopes on me. . . . I’m out to prove I’m not a bust.”
The Steelers’ struggles since the spinal injury to Ryan Shazier were dramatic, and Bush is viewed as the kind of player who can replace him in the middle of their defense.

Strike one, strike two, strike three
LATROBE, Pa. _ Welcome to the NFL, No. 1.
That, at least, is the message the Steelers’ offense appeared to be sending to No. 1 pick Devin Bush this afternoon during “Seven Shots,” the Steelers’ practice-opening, short-yardage/two-point conversion drill.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, in particular.
Roethlisberger, by coincidence or design, went at the rookie inside linebacker three consecutive times, and the offense won the rep on all three occasions.
The first was a conversion/scoring pass to wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, after which Bush responded with an expletive.
The second was a completion to running back Jaylen Samuels in the end zone, after which someone on the defensive sideline hollered “get there, 5-5.”
The third was a connection to 6-foot-4 tight end Vance McDonald that sailed right over Bush (5-11) on the way to McDonald, who finished with another conversion/score.

The kid is just special. He belongs in the Black and Gold. I can’t wait to see him next to Watt and behind Hayward and Tuitt.
I’m not sold on secondary depth, but if our starters stay healthy I believe this defense will be pretty damn good.

Ok. So this is just not really useful, but I was watching all these breakdowns and thinking about building a 2020+ defense. I kinda think that the 3-4 can be "salvaged" but you need 2 ILBs that can run like Bush. Then I as thinking about a Steelers defense with Bush, Shazier, Edmunds, and Polamalu down the middle. Just the athleticism alone got me giddy.

For some reason I like that the two Devin have become friends and are pulling for one another.

STEELERS vs. BUCCANEERS: Steelers LB Devin Bush
Drafted: Round 1, No. 10 overall
GRADE: A-
The Steelers' No. 1 pick is better than advertised as a disruptive force between the tackles. Bush is a Tasmanian devil within the box, exhibiting a combination of speed, quickness and burst that enables him to track down runners quickly on off-tackle runs. Additionally, Bush shows the athleticism, quickness and instincts to be effective in coverage between the hashes. Bush didn't get a perfect score because he fell off a few tackles and didn't produce a game-changing splash play during his time on the field. While the highlights were certainly spectacular, No. 55 needs to continue to work on his angles in pursuit to eliminate any missed tackles.

On the upswing
Devin Bush, the next great Steelers linebacker: Asking a rookie to call plays in the huddle, not to mention live up to the tradition of Steelers inside linebackers, is usually asking too much. However, Bush looks fully assembled straight out of the box. He flew around the field in the preseason opener against the Bucs, dominating the backups around him like a plus starter should. In just one half, he recorded 10 tackles, including five "stops," a Pro Football Focus stat measuring solo tackles that constitute an offensive failure. Because of the position he plays and the opportunity in front of him, he's my early favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Brian Baldinger On Devin Bush’s Steelers Preseason Debut: ‘He Was All Over The Field’
By Dave Bryan
Posted on August 12, 2019
Pittsburgh Steelers rookie inside linebacker Devin Bush had a great preseason debut Friday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the team’s first-round draft pick out of Michigan recorded 10 total tackles in the 40 total defensive snaps that he played. While our very own Alex Kozora has already done a great job of breaking down Bush’s play Friday night via the television tape, since then Brian Baldinger of the NFL Network has done the same via the all-22 tape that we are not privy to during the preseason.
