Another small player from a weak conference. NFL.com doesn't even have his picture. Not a fan of this pick.

Really like this guy. Amazing sideline to sideline speed. Very fluid in space.

He visited. I figured he'd be an URFA. R6 makes sense.

He joins Keion Adams and Oliqwerty as "developmental" OLBs.

And, as I said elsewhere, I know nothing about him, except that he misspelled Ulysses.

The theme this draft seems to be under-sized LBs.

...with range... and speed... and who can tackle.

Sixth round we get a fast athletic linebacker that can cover and probably play special teams. Sold

That is far from the most inspiring highlight. He wanders up to the line of scrimmage with no real plan. Gets blocked by his own DTs butt. Realizes the back ran past him and tackles him 12+ yards downfield.

I will try and remain optimistic.

I thought they were trading for Patrick Peterson to play ILB so he can cover the other team's best WR?

Pittsburgh Steelers: Ulysees Gilbert, LB/ST, Akron C+ Grade

Ulysees Gilbert seems like too much of a tweener to ever be able to contribute on defense, but he projects as a special-teams ace. It's fine to use a pick past No. 200 on a player like that, though there were more exciting options available.

If this guy becomes a steal, the speed between him and Bush would be unbelievable

I like that he makes his read and moves to the LOS. He loses the RB in the pile, but the hustle to get back and make the tackle is good. If he is nothing more than an LJ Fort replacement, he is worth the pick.

You make a solid point. He moves really well, likely even better than Fort. And a whatever round draft pick to avoid having to sift through the NFL veteran scrap heap to find someone who can do LJ Fort things for not the money the Eagles wanted to pay him is a pretty good use of resources.

I just get worried/frustrated at how thin they are across the roster. If VW or Bush can't both play hundreds and hundreds of snaps this year, they are in a big bind. Same at safety. And you draft Scrappy MACsackGuy at the top of the 6th round and then Ulyseeeeeeeeeys later in the same round. I mean they are both mobile and will move around the field better than Bostic and Matakevich. But when they have to go into a rush lane and meet an NFL guard or tackle, what happens then? I just worry that if you can't handle the blockers coming at you in the MAC, then forget it. But, I am willing to admit I am just being pessimistic and am flat out wrong.

I hear you, but I think there will be enough depth there and also guys getting waived if the Steelers need to pick up an ILB on the wire. I have Shrine game recorded and Gilbert played in that, so I will review it a bit to see how he played.

Interesting that guys like Tre Lamar -Clemson and Khalil Hodge - Buffalo went undrafted. Both were pedestrian ILB's, so not a lot of priority for guys inside that cant run.

Let us all know what you see. It is also fairly clear that the great draft internet didn't spend a great deal of time on Smith and Gilbert. So the "multiple reports" I'm seeing are actually almost certainly copy and pastes of the same original.

I agree that 225-235 LBs guys that can run are the new prototype. Both of the guys the Steelers drafted fit that. As long as they don't get swallowed up by blockers, they will most likely be vast improvements.

.

OK, I watched Gilbert in the East-West Shrine game and here are my observations. Thickly muscled and very quick. Drops in coverage and is fast to the football, seemed to have an understanding of the pass game very well, as he almost intercepted a screen pass for TD and quickly sniffed out a bootleg screen to the TE. I think he looked better in coverage than in the run game. Spies and looks for RB between the tackles and doesn't deliver a big hit as much as wraps up.

Daniel Jeremiah said a few things about him such as:
-probably the best cover LB in this game
-just put on his South Carolina tape and watch him fly all over the field
-had 3 defensive TD's in the last 2 seasons, has a nose for the football in the passing game.

His Akron Pro Day numbers are:

6;0" 224lbs.
40 time- 4.46
Vertical - 39.5
Bench press- 20 reps
3 cone drill- 6.94
Broad Jump - 10'6"

I think he is a special teamer. A 3rd down coverage ILB. A good backup ILB with speed that can cover, that needs work on recognition and shedding blocks between the tackles in the run game.

That certainly sounds FAR better than what comes up under a google search for his scouting report. I feel far better about things if he is basically LJ Fort at a fraction of the cost.

He looks faster than Fort, IMO, but I think you are right. Faster reserve ILB that can run and cover. I only watched the Shrine game and not a lot of in season film like some of the draftniks like Zeierline would, but Jeremiah said his pass coverage skills are what stands out. The 4.46 speed really showed up in the Shrine game. I hope he sticks and Jerry O can coach him up between the tackles.
