Buy Or Sell: The Steelers Should Draft A Kicker

ByMatthew Marczi
Posted on April 13, 2019

The offseason is inevitably a period of projection and speculation, which makes it the ideal time to ponder the hypotheticals that the Pittsburgh Steelers will face over the course of the next year, whether it is addressing free agency, the draft, performance on the field, or some more ephemeral topic.

That is what I will look to address in our Buy or Sell series. In each installment, I will introduce a topic statement and weigh some of the arguments for either buying it (meaning that you agree with it or expect it to be true) or selling it (meaning you disagree with it or expect it to be false).

Topic Statement: The Steelers should draft a kicker.

Explanation: The Steelers suddenly have a big question mark at kicker this offseason just one year removed from believing that they had a long-term answer. Chris Boswell went from being a Pro Bowler to nearly being cut in 2018 after missing 12 kicks, including seven of 20 field goal attempts. They have already vowed to give him competition this year.

With 10 picks? Might as well draft a consistent kicker to compete. Boz was terrible last season.

You can always get a solid kicker in UDFA.

In my mock I had LSU kicker Cole Tracy being drafted with one of the early 6th round picks.

They have to bring in competition to battle Boswell for the job. He was one of the reasons why they missed the postseason. Rooney talked about this after the season and wasn't happy. I can see them drafting one.

If we're happy with everyone we got and it looks as though we've rounded out the positions for camp, then I'm okay spending a draft pick on a kicker. Or, if we have reason to be believe he'll be our answer for the next fifteen years, I'm okay with it. Other than that, no.

You hit on the thing for me. If you are drafting a 10-15 year guy that kinda do it all and do it really well, then sure. Draft away! But if you are drafting that LS from a year or so ago...then no?

With a R6-7 pick, you can choose between one of these two:

a) A kicker, punter, or FB who has a better than 50-50 chance of being your starter for the next 10 years, and a good chance at becoming one of the best in the league at that role;

b) Some dickhead who has like a 10% chance of ever being an acceptable player at a "regular" position.

I guess there's also c) a trade for a cast-off veteran someone is looking to unload, but those are not always up to you.

But the point is, if you're not using low draft picks on those kinds of specialists, you're a moron unless you are 100% confident you're rock-solid at all of them.

Yeah...he’s really not good. I’ve been saying that for a while. Other than Dave, the writing is suspect at best. Some are really good at breaking down film but the writing and relating to the reader isn’t so hot.

Steelers find Chris Boswell's training camp competition

By BRYAN DEARDO

Chris Boswell will have to earn his job this summer if he wants to remain the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting kicker. After struggling through the worst season of his professional football career, Boswell will have competition when he reports to training camp in late July.

On Saturday, shortly after the 2019 NFL Draft had concluded, Pittsburgh signed free agent rookie kicker Matthew Wright, who made 98.6 percent of his extra points and 77.5 percent of his field goal attempts during his time at Central Florida. The Steelers are also bringing back Matt McCrane, who replaced Boswell late in the 2018 season after Boswell was placed on season-ending IR heading into Pittsburgh's regular season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals. Against the Bengals, McCrane, a 2018 undrafted rookie who spent time with Arizona and Oakland before coming to Pittsburgh, made all three of his field goal attempts in the Steelers' 16-13 victory over the Bengals. He was awarded the game ball after the game.
