View Full Version : I don't see a reason to keep Dixon around after he is healthy

What Batch did today, Dixon couldn't do if there were 5 guys playing on defense.

From what we have seen from Leftwich in the past and that he is signed for next season, he should be around next year.

Dixon is not signed for next season and he has not shown anything that would make anyone believe that he is an NFL QB. No way does the offense open up with Dixon in that game.

I hate to say it, but I agree.

there is always some dumb team out there who is interested in a WR to play QB. IMO, the steelers should trade him to one of these gullible and ignorant teams.

how long before the select steelers' facns start clamoring for another QB who can run, but not pass, read a defense or handle an entire playbook?

I have to agree. The guy has been here for 3 years and has shown very little signs of improving from year to year.

I was excited about the possibilities when we first got Dixon ... but he has no future as a starting QB. At least not with us.

I still think he could've had his moments if we'd used him to keep the defense off balance, either with trick plays or just as a decoy. But we never tried that, and it's pretty apparent Arians isn't ever going to have the brain capacity to do that (line up and play them straight up, and never deviate from your original gameplan, that's the most complex strategy he can manage). Plus, once we got Randle El back, I think Dixon even lost his trick-play appeal.

Oh well, so we took a gamble with a fifth-round pick. Worse things could have happened.

Hold up, hold up, hold up! I just wouldn't give up on Dixon just yet. My gut is talkin'.

This is likely's Batch last year. I'd at least put Dixon on IR, put an orginal round tender on him in the offseason, and bring him into camp so we have three QBs.

I can agree to THAT. At least keep Dixon around a bit longer. Who knows, it could pay off if it comes to that.

The real question is will today's game bring about the retiring of the nickname "Botch" from our HTG? :chuckle::wink02:

To the question of the thread, I pretty much thought that Dennis migh have played his last down for us after I heard he went in for surgery. A, he's not very good, and B he's not durable. Not a good combination for a back up quarterback on a perrenial contender.

I'd want to see more of Batch before I got too excited and do anything rash. Two of Batch's 3 TD's were thrown into coverage and were salvaged by Wallace. Not to take anything at all away from Batch, but if our running game wasn't clicking, I'm not sure how he would fare.

Good WR's make 4th string QB's look good. They can also make them look bad (see last week) if they play poorly and drop the ball. However, Batch is a wily vet who knows how to avoid pressure and still has a little (not a lot, a little) mobility to buy some time. He also gave a lesson to Dixon as to when the appropriate time is to take off and run. Of course, he's not a Hall of Fame QB but he is exprerienced and that helps alot.

The discussion about who has "starting potential" in this town isn't worth having. Ben is our QB, period.
I still like Dixon and think he'll go places, but unless he's cool with being a career backup, this gig isn't for him.

This

I'm not ready to give up on him yet, and I think neither are the steelers. Maybe by the end of next training camp they can entertain the idea of trading him

but at least batch can, for some reason, run just as good as dennis :chuckle:

Agreed...and he will open a spot for Ben to come back and not have to cut anyone else that they could loose to another team/etc.

dixon is too fragile. i would have thought after 3 years of being here he would have put more meat on than that. i dont see him as a long term backup and definately not a starter. he seems like a good guy but hes not made that much progress since he got here in my eyes

Batch showed enough to keep himself around for another season. Wow, NFL offensive player of the week.

He has shown signs but only in the preseason against 2nd and 3rd team players. I made the comment that he had Kordell skills with a brain. I was wrong about the brain. I'm not saying he isn't smart. I'm saying when the pressure is on his brain seems to shut down.
Dixon=Kordell.
Same skill set, same number, same lack of results.

Batch really impressed me yesterday but his career is winding down. Who will we have to fill in as the backup on down the road. I know we have Lefty but who's to say he won't go somewhere else and try to start. I think we need to keep Dixon around a little longer.l

Batch is going to wind down eventually. Depite his fine performance Sunday, he doesn't have much time left in the league.

The Steelers need a capable back-up to spell Ben. Lefty is alright, but Dixon has been given his chances and proven he can't do the job. He gets deer in the headlights when he drops back and he has no sense of pressure.

Hmmm...maybe the Steelers give Bruce Gradkowski a call if the Raiders are dumb enough to let him go for Al Davis' next pet project maybe?

Steelers Notebook: Hoke latest to join expanding injury list
Monday, September 27, 2010
By Ed Bouchette and Gene Collier, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
. -- Another game, another injury for the Steelers. This one was not sustained by a starter, but it knocked out one of their most valuable backups.

The medial collateral ligament in Chris Hoke's right knee was sprained in the final minutes of the game Sunday and he will be lost for at least two weeks, maybe more.

It was the same type of injury to quarterback Byron Leftwich's left knee that kept him out from Sept. 2 until last week. Leftwich had a second-degree sprain while the degree of injury to Hoke is not known.

"It's unfortunate, but that's how it goes, man, that's our story this year," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "So somebody will step up and play, hopefully."

Hoke started the second game of the season for Casey Hampton, who was sidelined by a hamstring injury. He has been Hampton's able backup since 2004 and is their only other true nose tackle.

This more or less is going to force the Steelers hand on Dixon, they're going to need a roster spot for a NT until Hoke comes back.

If we really need a roster spot, CUT SPAETH.

But seriously, all we need to do with Dixon is put him on IR. There is really no reason to be excited about him playing again this year. One more game, and we will have 3 better QBs on the roster. Maybe four if you count Randle El.

Actually after thinking about it more I think the Steelers will release Tony Hills to create a roster spot for McLendon. Hill's finally got a chance to play against the Titans, and he stunk it up. Mr Inactive, will be Mr released sometime in the next few days.

hmm, makes sense. Essex should be coming back right? That's foster scott and essex (hopefully) as backups

Plus they still have that guy from Tennessee (4th rounder?) on the PUP. He has to still be there for some reason :noidea:
