All season long, I’ve discussed the Pittsburgh Steelers problems in matching up versus empty. Not that facing an empty backfield is easy for any defense, it’s not, but I’d confidently bet the Steelers are among one of the worst teams in stopping it. Check the receipts. Off the top of my head, this year alone, I dedicated (https://steelersdepot.com/2018/09/film-room-keith-butlers-defense-is-terrifyingly-predictable/) three articles (https://steelersdepot.com/2018/12/film-room-the-steelers-still-cant-defend-empty/) to the topic (https://steelersdepot.com/2018/08/film-room-12-personnel-empty-sets-and-the-steelers-continued-failures/).
So what’s the right answer? There isn’t a one-size-fits-all but as Dan Orlovsky excellently pointed out in a tape breakdown Thursday afternoon, there are ways to win.
