I played hockey growing up and we had a similar superstition. You never, ever washed your equipment during the season. Mind you, this is with teenage boys sweating profusely in hockey equipment on average of six to eight hours a week or more. Then, we'd take it home in a zipped hockey bag and often, forget to take it out so it'd dry.

To this day, if I walk into a room or by something that smells like mildew, I immediately flash back to hockey locker rooms.
