Suggestions for pass interference rule changes

1. Capped at 15 yards and a first down.

2. Inside the 30, max half the distance to the goal line; the ball is never placed on the 1-yard line unless the play was from the 2-yard line.

3. If the pass goes higher than a punt, the pass interference rule is waived.

That would pretty much take care of all the bullshit.

Never been a fan of the 'spot of the foul' penalty, especially since a lot of these calls are 'judgment' calls.

I know the officials are put in a difficult position, but watching game after game where they are basically looking at the same play, yet call it differently every time is beyond frustrating. It seems every game I watch, these calls seem to mostly go in the favor of one of the teams for the entire game.

Watching a guy like Flacco just throw the ball up and continually getting bailed out by refs is very hard to watch. The Steelers do need to work on getting their heads around better, but some of these calls are ridiculous. AB gets mauled in the end zone by a defender that doesn't look back, puts his hands on him, pushes him, and has his hands on AB's face and helmet and.....no call. It is completely unacceptable to be that inconsistent.

Agreed. The PI calls against us were justified. Get your head around and at least pretend that you're trying to catch the ball. No PI penalty and it's still incomplete. We're supposed to coach that. Hopefully they get it cleaned up.

It is NOT an automatic penalty if you have your back to the ball. That's just horseshit that the announcers say.

The penalty is completely a judgment call by the officials about whose actions are interfering with whom. "Trying to play the ball" is not a requirement; it merely helps your case in that judgment call.

If you get drilled in the back because the quarterback is stupid as fuck, and you did not gain that position by committing interference, it is not supposed to be a penalty. It is a bad throw that the offense is not supposed to be rewarded for making. Same for all those PI calls where the ball was underthrown and the receiver comes back for it and runs into the defender who was assuming it would be a regular throw.

Having said that, the officials are also known to be stupid as fuck about making judgment calls based on this particular misconception, and have been in flat-out reward-the-offense-unapologetically mode for well over a decade. So you are certainly putting yourself at a disadvantage if you aren't facing the politically correct direction to make a play on the ball, so that sucks for us.

The second PI call (the one that gave them a free touchdown from the 1-yard line) was not interference; their lumbering TE did one of the most obvious push-offs I have ever seen at about the 5-yard line and our guy was trying to close the gap. In real time, it was blatant offensive pass interference, and the replay confirmed that.

The 40-yard moonball you can debate about, but let's call it for what it was: A stupid throw poorly executed. The point of pass interference is to stop the defense from cheating to defend against well-thrown passes. So you could basically rule out calling PI on about 95 percent of passes thrown by Joe Flacco, and that's probably a conservative figure.

On the Edmunds PI, he was in position and knocked away the ball (without contacting the receiver). It’s bullsh!t that “not turning his head” is the difference between a call and a non-call. As fansince76 illustrated, other CBs can mug a receiver, but as long as they look at the ball, it’s not PI. WTF!?! :noidea:

Similarly, in the Burnett PI, the ball hit him in the lower part of the helmet. Head turn or not, it was simply a BAD pass (not PI).

No. It is not a "rule." It may often be called that way, but it is not the rule. And when that thinking is applied in a way that produces a bad call rewarding a BAD THROW, it is indeed horseshit.

Also eliminate the "coming back to the ball call" shit. If the ball is under-thrown/back shoulder and the receiver stops and runs through a defender, the defender has every right to be there and it should be a non call EVERY TIME!

I'm surprised a team hasn't come up with a plan to have all it's receivers run GO routes for X number of seconds and then just stop and run back through the defender and whichever guy gets thrown the ball it should be instant PI.

Call it the Flacco Rule.

Anything more than 10 Yards is giving the receiver the benefit of the doubt that even though it was a catchable ball, he was actually going to hold on to it. That doesn't always happen.
