In just his second game back on the field after serving a four-game PED suspension (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000926233/article/bengals-lb-vontaze-burfict-suspended-for-four-games), Cincinnati Bengals (http://www.nfl.com/teams/cincinnatibengals/profile?team=CIN) linebacker Vontaze Burfict (http://www.nfl.com/player/vontazeburfict/2533058/profile) is already embroiled in more controversy.

The most notable hit came when the linebacker tossed an elbow at Antonio Brown (http://www.nfl.com/player/antoniobrown/2508061/profile)'s head in the third quarter of Sunday's 28-21 loss (https://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2018101401/2018/REG6/Steelers@Bengals?icampaign=scoreStrip-globalNav-2018101401) to the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.nfl.com/teams/pittsburghsteelers/profile?team=PIT). The move not only sent Brown out of the game briefly but dinged up the Bengals (http://www.nfl.com/teams/cincinnatibengals/profile?team=CIN)' impressive rookie safety Jessie Bates (https://www.nfl.com/prospects/jessie-bates?id=32462018-0002-5601-3099-1ea09eebf7a3). There was no flag on the play.
The hit won't cost Burfict playing time, however.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Burfict is not expected to be suspended for his actions on Sunday, but there are several plays that will be reviewed for a potential fine, per a source informed of the situation.
For his career, Burfict has missed 10 games due to suspension (six for violating on-field safety rules) and fined more than $295,000 (https://twitter.com/marcsesslernfl/status/974705723711012864).
If the latest dirty move simply results in another middling fine, it's unlikely Burfict will change his playing style.

What a joke the league has become..

Not surprising, the NFL's discipline is purely reactionary. Burfict had the intent to injure Brown, but since he passed the concussion protocol, no foul.

Mmhmm. And to think these guys made OT 10 minutes in the name of player safety

Wow.

Should just unleash JuJu on him.

JuJu was suspended a game last year for a LEGAL block that resulted in a Burfict concussion......yet Burfict delivers an intentional forearm shiv to AB's head and there will be no suspension...........par for the course with the NFL front office.

First of all, it wasn't a National game, secondly, the announcers didn't have a conniption fit. We can thank John I can't coach my way out of a paper bag Gruden for JuJu's one-game vacation.

And because the postgame highlight shows have the inability to focus on multiple topics of discussion for one game, with the big “controversy” last evening requiring hot takes being whether the AB TD should have been called back for an illegal pick

What a joke the league has become..
It's painfully obvious God-dell's Disciplinary actions have NOT had their desired consequences. In fact, have only serve to embolden this Sociopathic Criminal !

Suspending the result and not the actual play. It’s the main problem with these things...

Bengals come to Heinz last game of regular season - if the league does nothing the Steelers may decide this ends one way or another. Burfict better hope the Steelers are not out of the playoff race and cannot afford to make getting even the goal for that game.

Multiple Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.espn.com/nfl/team/_/name/pit/pittsburgh-steelers) players spoke out strongly against Cincinnati Bengals (http://www.espn.com/nfl/team/_/name/cin/cincinnati-bengals) linebacker Vontaze Burfict (http://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/15246/vontaze-burfict) for his elbow to Antonio Brown (http://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/13934/antonio-brown)'s head in the third quarter of Pittsburgh's 28-21 win on Sunday....

"It's tough to see AB get hit like that," he said. "With all the emphasis on quarterback safety, what about a guy like AB -- a superstar he is in this league, how much money he's getting paid, how much he means to this team? A cheap shot like that, I thought was unnecessary. ... If they want to talk about making this game safer, maybe they will do something. Or maybe they will put in a new rule that no one is going to call when it matters. Maybe it's a PR stunt."

At least the players are finally starting to realize that the NFL doesn't give a crap about them.

At this point, the NFL really needs to consider kind of a Burfict specific punishment design. Like a 2-3 game ban, but one of those games specifically being the next Steelers game. In other words, telling Burfict to knock it off in directed way.

Hopefully someone recognized in the media needs to start asking, as DeCastro did today, why the NFL apparently only cares about contact to QBs since players like AB are not being paid chump change either. That is assuming the policy is not primarily to protect the league's most "marketable" (Brady, Rodgers, Brees, and second tier QBs like Ben & Matt Ryan - see a pattern yet?) stars

Previous Bengals-Steelers games only racked up suspensions because Nantz, Simms & Gruden pitched fits

It was the last 2 game between the steelers and the bengals on national TV(2015 wild card game and last year MNF)

At this point, I'd say a 6 game suspension and the money goes to the player he tried to injure. He has enough history now to be told he will be thrown out of the league if this continues. He has mental issues, Burfict playing football is like giving a pyromaniac gasoline & matches.

True - but it was still the announcers getting apoplectic that forced Goodell to do something

If Tony Dungy & Rodney Harrison had gone off last night during the NBC pregame on Burfict like they did in October 2010 against James Harrison’s hit on a Cleveland receiver in another 1 pm game, which started Goodell’s jihad against Harrison, this would be handled very differently by the league office

It's all about optics and public perception.

The comment section for most of these articles/Tweets has a common theme: Within the first 10 comments is a Bengals fan saying that Ryan Shazier deserved to have his neck broken.

What a sad, sad bunch some Bengals fans are. Not all... but, an alarming number are simply Burfict-esque.

Agreed

More complete quote than the one in the article I linked to yesterday from DeCastro (IMO one of the most insightful Steelers)

“I can say whatever I want, but at the end of the day, it’s their decision. If they want to talk about making this game safer, then maybe they’ll do something. Maybe it’s a P.R. stunt and none of that matters and they like the stirring of the pot that they like to do, get everyone riled up, sweet highlight tape before the game so it all happens again kind of thing. I don’t know what their deal is. They’ll figure it out. I can’t worry about it.”

When your team has been Charlie Brown to the Steelers Lucy going back to the early 70s there is going to be some deranged bitterness within a segment of the fan base

Stanford often does not field a full roster (70 players?), because their academic requirements are too high. DeCastro is an example of someone who has an IQ above the 95th percentile.

I wonder if DeCastro will be the team rep when Foster moves on or retires?
