It isn't hard to explain. Most teams do it. Many teams have prominent players out there on special teams.

I remember not that long ago where everyone complained that the Steelers coverage teams were poor because Tomlin didn't play enough front line guys.

Once again, we see what is a simple unfortunate event during the course of an NFL seasons being elevated by Steelers fans into a vast intricate web of coaching negligence. Of course, the same thing would have happened if the coverage teams were comprised of solely bottom third of the roster guys and the Browns ran one back. Then someone would've went to Twitter and been like "I love playing special teams coach! - Put me in!" and the entire internet would've been like "See! Tomlin's an Idiot! Joe Haden WANTED to cover kicks. That guy is a great tackler! He would've stopped that return. Fire Everyone!"

And then there is my favorite group of internet commentators -- the folks that get out their secret Billy B decoder ring and play "What Would Bellichek Do"?

Why do so many people think special teams are so dangerous? It’s no more dangerous than any other aspect of football. It’s such a silly concept.

By the way...while we are talking about special teams: they do everything to eliminate the kick return in football yet there is a penalty if the kicker kicks it out of bounds...
