The Pittsburgh Steelers may not have won or lost this won, but there were certainly winners and losers on the field. second-year outside linebacker T.J. Watt, making his debut start on the left side after missing all of the preseason and almost all of training camp, was a clear winner.

In the 16th start of his career, the former first-round draft pick already gained more than half of his sack total from his rookie season, bringing down Cleveland Browns quarterback Tyrod Taylor a whopping four times, which according to Alex Kozora’s research is the most in a game by a Steelers defender since Joey Porter in 2001.........

Like I said in the game day thread Watt seems to player better on the left side and thought that when watching him in college. He may be a beast this year. Anyhow heck of a game from him today!

Bell & our R1 would have been a good value.

Watt & Mack... Mack & Watt... either way, it has a nice ring to it.

At least people can ( or should) stop saying we have no “play maker” on defense. We most certainly do. He’s the younger, and usually healthier, of the Brothers Watt.

He’s an absolute star. And this is the WORST he’ll ever be. A guy like this, with his work ethic, ONLY improves.

I’m hoping we’ll one day see JJ, wearing his gold jacket, be the one to give the tearful speech to induct his little brother, T.J., into that hallowed Hall.

If they both stay relatively healthy going forward, there should be at least TWO golden hangers at Ma and Pa Watt’s family home to hang up a couple gold jackets when the boys come home for holidays. :)

I’m assuming that going up against RTs, instead of LTs, will get Watt at least 1 sack/week.

Even if it is “every other week”, that would be 11.5 sacks.

My subdued guess is... 19 sacks.

Watt should have been going up against RT's from the get go but the Dupree experiment was still going on. . I remember when he caused Penn State havoc on that side. At least Pitt has it right this season.

He’ll also probably get a few picks when he drops back into coverage. With Cam and Tuitt on the line eating up double teams, Watt is gonna have a monster year.

Yep.

Watt can can line up at ILB (e.g. in the dime); so, I expect 5-7 INTs from him each season.

Well an injured Rodgers just came back from a 20-0 half and beat the Bears and Mack on one leg. Some teams just know how to adjust.

Didn't Tomlin once say they don't adjust or scheme for an opponent? It sounds familiar.

It seemed most of their adjustments centered on blocking pass rushers, waiting for Mack to get tired, and tackling. Oh yeah, waiting for a gimpy Rodgers to save them.

I wouldn't rush to anoint the Packers just yet. In the first half, their RT and LG simply forgot to block anyone. In the second half, they kinda sorta got in the way of some people.

He has said something like that before and at times it has made sense. Early in Tomlin's tenure, I wouldn't have changed the defense week to week. I would've just rolled out that squad and told the other team "you worry about blocking them". In recent years, the offense has just needed to execute its game to put points up on any defense.

Regardless, the statement was never really true. In the 08 SB, the defense totally changed its coverages to hold Fitzgerald down for a half. There are other examples. The deployment of various "Gronk specialists" over the years, with Cortez Allen being the only one that worked.

.

Ya know, some rushers prefer one side over the other due to mechanics or their pass rush move. Its not necessarily LT vs RT skill set, but can have some to do with it. To some if feels more comfortable swatting with left and and dipping the right shoulder while turning the corner. Also, some find a spin move counter inside from the left side better than when they have to spin the other way.

I'm hoping that is the case for Watt and Dupree, that they feel more comfortable where they are. Dupree looked better running a shorter arc from the right side IMO, his sack/fumble and QB pressures/hits looked more impactful than last season, so lets see where it all goes.

Mack was pretty much non-existent in the second half. Rodgers is easily the best QB in the league right now and it helps that they clearly made some nice adjustments at the half.

da bears still get owned by the pack. Moral of the story = qb is the only position where you can bring in a player for big money and that one person will make a huge diff

J.J Watt had begun to be dominant in its second season after a good rookie season, but not great.

If T.J Watt is half dominant that his brother was at his peak, our defense could be scary, especially since our secondary was very good against the two very good WR of the Browns(Gordon and Landry)

No excuse for Butler.

In fact, T.J had more sacks in his rookie season than J.J (7.0 sacks for T.J and 5.5 for J.J)!

Of course, the stats not say everything and J.J plays in a position that benefits the sacks less, which makes his stats even more impressive during his peak.

As I said, if T.J is just half that J.J was in his peak, he's going to have a big impact for the steelers....

You are correct... but, I’m not talking about sacks alone. TJ had INTs and passes defensed.

But, Yes, as I’ve averred: if TJ has one DPOY (compared to JJ’s three) it’s a win for us.
