OC Randy Fichtner replaces OC Todd Haley.

Fichtner has never called plays at the NFL level, but the plan seems to be for the longtime quarterbacks coach to make very few changes (http://www.espn.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/94013/ben-roethlisberger-steelers-visualize-2018-attack-under-randy-fichtner) to the scheme the team’s been running the past six seasons under Haley ...

He will need to figure out how to get Ben Roethlisberger to play more consistently on the road, but he’ll get plenty of help from head coach Mike Tomlin, offensive line coach (the architect of the run game) Mike Munchak, and now de facto player-coach, Ben Roethlisberger :chuckle:

It will be interesting to see how the play selection changes. I figure it will be basically the same playbook, but maybe the emphasize different pages?

I read somewhere recently where someone characterized Haley as really really good at designing an offense but really really mediocre at actually calling the plays.

Kinda thought that was pretty spot-on

1st and goal on the 1, 5 wide empty back set.... How many times did we see stuff like this, on short yardage situations, already showing our hand that it's not gonna be a run?

It's not the playbook that was the problem, the playcalling was head scratching to say the least.

And with a 260+ lb QB never running a QB sneak on 3rd and inches, only to get a run play stuffed half the time.

My favorite were the drive killing pass bombs on 3rd and short to anybody not names AB. Okay they hit on a couple, but most simply handed the ball to the other team instead of continuing drives.

Last season, the Steelers offense had the fewest “3-&-outs” in the NFL (just 15.5%).

Between the 20’s, this offense was unstoppable. The problem, as linked/posted by you, was settling for FGs.

The best example was a few seasons ago, in the season opener against the Taperiots, and the Steelers’ opening drive was in full force. The Taperiots were reeling, and then Haley calls a “triple half-caff, soybean upside-down macchiato w/ an add shot”... and the drive dies. (Note: D-Will was leading the league in rushing, but only inside the 20’s... because once the red-zone was reached, D-Will was somehow forgotten.)

Yep - in terms of "Red Zone Scoring Attempts per Game" (which I am guessing means drives that got to the red zone) in 2017 the Steelers were third behind only the Patriots and Rams. Looking on the minimal bright side of that stat, not being able to finish those drives helped make Boz a lot of $$$$

I had no problem with Haley's playbook in the last few years, but it was his play calling, I had a problem.

Fichtner does not have to be the best OC in the world, the only thing I ask is not to have too much drive killer because of the playcalling and not having a big ego.

For the ego, I'm not worried, since he has a good relationship with Ben and it's probably not going to bother him if it's Ben and the rest of the offense who has the credit, which is important, since It's important to have an OC that does not try to be a genius, which was one of my problems with Haley.
