Ben Roethlisberger setting tone for Steelers with weight room work

Jeremy Fowler
ESPN Staff Writer

PITTSBURGH -- Ben Roethlisberger's physical reset has his Steelers teammates excited.

Roethlisberger, who slimmed down in the offseason thanks to cutting down carbs and sugars, has been a fixture in the weight room over the past month, wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey said.

Entering his 15th training camp with the Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger said he's focused on being at his best both physically and mentally at age 36 and has lost weight this offseason to "lighten the load" on his knees.

Mason Rudolph appears to have lit a fire under Ben.

I doubt that. Being old and wanting more trophies lit that fire

Selling the Steelers on extending his contract for mega millions after the current one expires presumably has something to do with it as well since one message in drafting Rudolph is the Steelers are seriously preparing to address life after Ben by drafting a potential starter rather than a backup or longshot

It was only a pilot light that occasionally flickered out. 2016 and 2017 had stretches where Ben kinda hammed it. He also wasn't particularly game breaking in the postseason either. Lest we forget he talked retirement after losing to the Patriots.

The Steelers fired his archnemesis and drama-whore Todd Haley, cut the useless fat (Bryant, Mitchell) from the team, brought in OKST Mason Rudolph, who Ben wasted little time throwing shade towards, not to mention, they're very likely letting Bell go next offseason. The Steelers are seriously preparing for life after Ben and he's being pushed. Now lets see how it translates to the field.
