View Full Version : Jeff Fisher: Refs blew two calls in second half of Pittsburgh Steelers game

Titans Coach Jeff Fisher said the Steelers got away with at least a couple of penalties on Sunday.

Steelers linebacker James Harrison should have been flagged for body-slamming quarterback Vince Young in the third quarter, according to Fisher.

"You say if that happened to (Tom) Brady or that happened to so-and-so or so-and-so there would have been seven flags on the field," Fisher said. "Why wasn't there one yesterday? I don't know. Maybe it was the heat."

Fisher also said that Steelers safety Troy Polamalu should have been penalized near the end of the game when he jumped over offensive linemen to tackle quarterback Kerry Collins for a 1-yard loss.

Nope. Troy made it by 1/10th of a second, loser.

Exactly, and what difference would it have made anyway if Troy had been called offsides? The Titans scored the TD a play or two later.

I do agree with him on the body slam though. I thought at the time that a flag would be thrown, and am absolutley sure that if you did that to Brady or Manning you'd be flagged. I don't why it is, but the refs seem to have a different set of rules for Brady, and Manning than they do for the rest of the league.

I agree flags would have been thrown if it were Brady. But NOT because it was the right call. Because the NFL can't lose one of it's golden boys. It was a little rough, yea, but I think the game is football. Correct me if I'm wrong. Plus, VY was not down yet, so they were simply finishing the play. Let him go before the whistle and we would have been burned. As far as the Polamalu play....Come on! That was a thing of beauty. He timed that perfectly.

Harrison didn't body slam him, he only upended him by pulling his legs off the ground. The other two were tackling him high and trying to get him to the ground. The end result was an unintentional body slam, but not due to a single player's intent to body slam.

It is the equivalent of getting blocked into the kicker or "fair-catcher", an unintentional violation caused by another player. It just so happens that the "other player" was a teammate (or two), but since the body slamming is a personal foul of intent, it doesn't apply.

I don't know, I thought the slam should have been a penalty if you go by the letter of the rule. :noidea: Troy was definitely NOT offside on his leap, though. That was just picture-perfect timing.

Still though, I've about had it up to here with teams blaming the refs every time they lose to the Steelers. Hey Jeff, your team got beat, and beat up. Deal with it.

Jeffie, it doesn't matter if the refs were right or wrong. All that matters is that YOUR team didn't play well enough to overcome a couple judgment calls.

Now really... did you lose because of a couple whistles... or because you turned the ball over 7 times? Think hard before you answer, because this counts toward your final grade.

Shut up, the Steelers have been screwed by bad officiating themselves. The difference is that we've been able to overcome those obstacles from time to time.

Here are the quotes in context.

(on if he thought there was a hold on Chris Johnson’s 85-yard touchdown run)
It was a hold. It’s one that if you’re going to call it, then call it every single time. It just happens, it wasn’t the only hold in the ballgame, it just happened to be one that was called on us at the wrong time.

No argument here. He admits it was a penalty, shows his frustration at that call not being consistent (how many times have we said the same thing about Harrison?), yet doesn't blame a "bad call" for the loss of the TD.

(on if there should have been a penalty called when the Steelers slammed Vince Young down)
Yes, there should have.
(on why they didn’t make that call)
You’re going to have to ask the referee. I was wondering the same thing. You say if that happened to (Tom) Brady or that happened to so and so or so and so there would have been seven flags on the field, yes probably. Why wasn’t there one yesterday? I don’t know…maybe it was the heat.
Many of us have said the same thing, that if that play was against Brady or Manning, it would have been a penalty. We differ on whether it was an actual penalty or not. Notice however, he doesn't blame the refs for the loss.

(on if there should have been a defensive pass interference call on the pass intended for Nate Washingtonhttp://www.titansonline.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.titansonline.com/team/roster/nate-washington/54d4a869-8f16-41e6-849d-6e52122ca582/))
If I was on either side of that play, I would have been happy with defensive pass interference being called.

Sorry coach, remember the rules are that a player can now get pushed out of bounds. Furthermore, should we call the interference on Ward in the endzone? The answer to both those questions is no, Ward had his feet tangled up by a DB, Washington was going up for the ball with a DB, and then got pushed OB.

(on if Troy Polamalu’s leaping tackle over the offensive line at the goal line is a legal play)
As long as you’re not in the neutral zone or over the neutral zone when the ball is snapped it is okay. Yeah you can jump over, you can go over—there are rules against leaping and leveraging in try situations and field goals but not on scrimmage plays.
(on if Polamalu was in the neutral zone on that play)
There is no way he was not in the neutral zone.
May I suggest you watch the tape??

I don't know if intererence should have been called on that play or not. But what I do know is that I had visions of strangling Will Allen for the duration of that final series of the Titans. :chuckle:

I don't give a flying EF what that piece of crap cry baby down in Tennessee says about the game. His effing team got smoked by the best defense in the league. His QB got Benched for Sucking, His Back up, Sucked, his Running back was beaten to a bloody pulp and his entire team's performace was a pathetic joke.

Jeff can go teach his grandmother to suck eggs.

He isn't that good of a coach, his team almost always Out performs expectations or Under Peforms expectations. They never do what they are picked to do. "Titans will be down this year" They win 13 games. "Titans will be awesome this year" They win 6 games. They can all suck on an egg.

Hey Jeff, ONE YARD SHORT! That is your Official Legacy!

Seriously, I've had enough of the whiny bitch syndrome that is currently permeating the league. Why can't you just admit you got outplayed and made WAY too many mistakes to ever deserve to win that game? Seven turnovers ...SEVEN!!!! How can, you in any realm of reality, try to make a case that the refs lost you that game? You ought to thank your lucky Goddamned stars you weren't EMBARRASSED and run the hell out of Tennessee on a rail by your own fan base!

Just like Ray Lewis, right or wrong about the calls, your QB threw four picks. Every team gets hosed from time to time, but you can't try to lay the loss at the zebra's feet when you completely shit the bed the entire game on offense. It might be different if it was a back and forth type of game where both teams played lights out and a bad call determined the outcome. You could feel some sympathy or outrage, but you had better have played one hell of a game to pull that card!

"You say if that happened to (Tom) Brady or that happened to so-and-so or so-and-so there would have been seven flags on the field,"

He is right about that; all Brady has to do is ask for a flag and he gets one. But he's pretty much the exception.

This is why Jeff Fisher isn't successful, he spends too much time deferring the blame rather than working on improving the team. Oh well, works for me. If I were a Titans fan I'd be going nuts that Jeff Fisher is trying to make excuses for why they lost. Can you imagine Tomlin whining like that?!

I know many people in TN who say the "refs were in the bag for the Steelers". I then explain the facts of life to them and they shut up.

Fischer is making it out like they got robbed when in fact, they got assaulted. I have not seen a beating like that since Ali vs. Frazier. "Frazier goes down! Frazier goes down!"

My suggestion to the other teams is to not disrespect the Steelers in any manner. Also say, "please" and "thank you" and shake hands after the game. Or you will be put on the "To Do List".

Apparently every steeler victory is only because of the refs. Was it the refs fault their offense forced 7 turnovers? No. Was it the refs fault that the Titans allowed a kickoff return for a TD? No. Was it the refs fault that the Titans failed to create a bunch of turnovers? No. Would penalties on those two plays change the outcome? No. Case closed

Yep, that's the way that it is for the Steelers. They only win because of the Refs.

That play by Troy has been shown in slow motion by all of the networks and EVERYONE has said that he timed it perfectly. Fisher should go find something else to cry about.

I actually loved how the game was officiated, they really let them play. If there was a different crew out there, there would have been tons of personal fouls after the play was over with the tussling after many plays etc. Loved the officiating, thats how football is suppose to be played.
