Steelers training camp preview: New deal for Chris Boswell could be on table

JOE RUTTER | Friday, July 20, 2018

STARTERS

Chris Boswell: He didn’t win team MVP, but a case could be made that the Pro Bowl kicker was the team’s MVP in clutch situations in 2017. He had four winning field goals in the final minute, including three on the final play of regulation — all in the second half of the season. That’s the difference between a 13-3 and 9-7 record. Boswell set a franchise record with 142 points and made all four attempts of at least 50 yards. Unless he is signed to an extension, Boswell will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Jordan Berry: He was the first restricted free agent to sign this winter, and he will enter his fourth season with the Steelers. Berry finished No. 23 among punters with a 39.8 net average and was No. 31 with a 43.2 gross average. But he had only two touchbacks, no blocks and dropped 26 punts inside the 20. He is the only specialist who will have competition in camp.

Kameron Canaday: Considerable debate ensued in 2017 when the Steelers used a sixth-round draft pick to take long-snapper Colin Holba. It continued when the Steelers cut Holba and kept Canaday, who was only brought into camp for competition when Greg Warren’s lengthy career ended. Canaday, though, was up to the task and didn’t have a botched snap the entire season. He is back for a second year.

Besides Justin Tucker( and maybe Gostkowski) there is no other kicker I would take over Boswell.

Boswell deserves his long term contract.

FWIW getting Chris Boswell's new contract negotiation done does not seem to be a matter of any apparent urgency based on this P-G article yesterday

The Steelers don’t have a lot of pressing contractual matters for their star players before the start of the season now that it’s known Bell will be playing on the one-year franchise tender again. But Boswell is definitely someone they would like to sign to a long-term deal this summer....

Boswell said negotiations between his agent and the Steelers have not begun this summer, but he added “that could change in the next couple of days, and we’ll just take it from there.”

One of the sticking points could be the rising salaries of kickers around the league. The league’s highest-paid kicker is New England’s Stephen Gostkowski, whose average annual salary is $4.3 million. Five kickers average $4 million or more per season, and 13 average $3 million or more per season, including many who haven’t been as consistent or as clutch as Boswell....

The Steelers’ preference would be to sign Boswell to a long-term deal, but mechanisms are in place to prevent him from reaching unrestricted free agency after the season ends. The Steelers could place the franchise or transition tag on him.

http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/s...s/201807260177 (http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2018/07/26/chris-boswell-contract-steelers-training-camp-nfl-place-kickers/stories/201807260177)

In his comments today, Colbert observed that paying Bell under the tag is not helpful for negotiating any contract extensions

Colbert admitted Bell’s tag may impede them from signing someone else to a long-term deal this year. The Steelers have roughly $5.5 million in salary cap space left, according to OverTheCap.com (https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/pittsburgh-steelers/), but that only counts the top 51 salaries right now. Once the season begins, everything counts — 53 roster players, those on injured reserve and other inactive lists and an 11-player practice squad.

The Steelers prefer to be $5 million under the cap to start the season to account for injuries, so there’s not much wiggle room there to sign someone else without restructuring contracts.

Starters entering the final year of their contracts who could be in line for new deals are Chris Boswell, Ramon Foster, and Vince Williams along with backups Jesse James and Landry Jones. Typically, the Steelers would extend their quarterback with two years left on his contract, which is Ben Roethlisberger’s situation.

Good. This guy has been clutch for this team and deserves a good contract. He has earned it IMO.

Who can forget what we went through before we got Boz? Let's hope they get a deal done and we can rest assured that Boz stays a Steeler.
