Steelers roster additions: A coincidence or well-laid plan?

Last year, the Steelers led the league in running counters successfully. LeVeon Bell, who cuts like a jackrabbit and accelerates like a cheetah, runs the play to perfection behind an athletic offensive line. The team also ran shovel passes to good effect both in short yardage and goal-line situations.

Two of the team’s rookie additions, running back Jaylen Samuels and slot receiver/returner Quadree Henderson both excelled in college at running jet sweeps. Samuels, like last year’s addition James Connor, also ran shovel passes well as has Juju Smith-Schuster while a rookie with the Steelers.

On the offensive line, the team drafted tackle Chukwuma Okorofor whose predraft evaluations claim he has the mobility to reach the second level on running plays and enough lateral agility to mirror and stay square against inside counters.

The team added UDFA Patrick Morris, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound uber-athletic guard/center from TCU whose 3-cone time at the NFL Combine bested Bud Dupree’s and missed James Washington’s mark by a tenth of a second. Only one center since 1987 beat his 9’9″ broad jump, and only one bettered his 36.9″ vertical. Morris put up 37 reps at 225lbs, and his game tape matches his athleticism.

Putting this all together, what does it mean? Will the offense under Randy Fitchner move closer to a college attack with frequent counters, jet sweeps, misdirections, and shovel passes involving multiple players in any direction at any time to keep defenses off balance and forced to hesitate before attacking?

We’ll soon find out in camp.

I'm pretty sure Tomlin and Colbert had a giant dart board in the war room and were just firing darts from the back of the room to get random pics with no plan at all.
