severance pay / disability payment ... call it what you will
its a gift of sorrow and appreciation from the Steelers to Shazier IMO
I do not believe he ever laces them up again and even if he manages to battle back to 100% ( miraculously ) I think it would be foolish of him to do so ...
that said I want to see him walk normally and be able to live a normal life , have kids and teach them to be good people and be able to play with them etc

Agreed, I thought he was doing OK until I saw him at the draft . Very sad to see him walking like that.

I believe he will walk reasonably well again and if by some even more amazing miracle he can play again, I would 100% support him whichever decision he makes.
It is his life.

I'm just happy he's walking.

It's better than not walking at all, which is where he was not long ago. Still, I think a return to football is wildly optimistic, just returning to normal would be good.

He's not playing again. We all know it. I'm a fan, but he's done.

That's how I've felt since about a week after the injury.

not trying to be insensitive, but it's not a gift of sorrow and appreciation. the Steelers were obligated to pay Shazier that $$ because they had exercised his 5th year option last season.

not taking it as being insensitive , the whole topic teeters on sounding insensitive and I almost deleted my initial statement because I feared it would be taken wrong
I am not fully versed in 5th year options , other than the basics .... that said ( maybe its wrong ) but in the thread about Duprees 5th year option people seem to think he can be cut with no financial loss if they change their mind ?
if that is a correct line of thinking ( I do not know and will admit it ) could they not just as easily cut Ryan ( would have been heartless to do ) but technically speaking ... or is there something about having to be able to pass a physical attached to it ?
asking because I am not well versed in this option clause

5th year options are guaranteed ONLY for injury. They took the option then he got hurt - thus guaranteed.

I was glad to see him walking as well as he did during the draft. I think since he has come this far, and probably has feeling in his legs he could return to a normal type of life where he can walk normally and even run, but I agree with most here in saying his football days are most likely over.

A very classy move.
If he comes up short of his ultimate goal of playing again, I hope he is offered a job within the organization if he is interested in doing that.
