Steelers seem unconcerned about missing out on inside linebacker in draft

by ED BOUCHETTE
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
APR 28, 2018

The Steelers could not or would not draft the inside linebacker they so desperately needed, so they did the next best thing.

They added three big safeties, one or two of whom might help fill the Ryan Shazier void.

I don't think they're unconcerned. There is nothing they would rather have than a Ryan Shazier clone or any 4-down LB that can cover. A 235 lbs man that can fly around the field with the speed of a CB will always be better than a 215 lbs man with identical skills and speed.

They see the NFL changing, and they're trying to put themselves in the best position possible with the talent that was available to them.

What does Bouchette think they should do, run around the stage screaming like the sky is falling?

If they were drafting in the top 10 like so many shitty teams, they would have been able to get Roquan Smith, Edmunds, Evans, or maybe LVE.....but they weren't. They probably did try to move up to get Evans. He would have been a good pick, but they would have had less draft picks to add other talent.

It's not easy building rosters and getting impact players at need positions in a draft that is weak at that need position when you're picking #28.

They're doing the best they can. Maybe there will be a preseason roster cut to save a team money that can get them a LB that has the skillset they desire.

Steelers Depot podcast talked about this today. Basically you have to move to #20 in the first round to get Evans. That is Detroit's pick. That move likely costs based on those value charts you your 1st + a third + a fifth this year or maybe a 4th next year. That is a heck of a lot of draft capital for one player. Plus, there is a very good chance that Detroit doesn't want to move off that pick and lose out on Ragnow at center.

They went after R. Evans with a trade attempt and when they didn't work out they didn't settle but went after other needs. It stinks but oh well.

Next year's LB class could be scary good. Josh Allen, Devin White, Devin Bush, Mack Wilson...

I wonder if the Steelers are still high on Matakevich and expect him to take another step forward this season?

They sound very high on him. Colbert made it seem like there would be less questions at ILB if he didn't get hurt, which was in the same quarter Shazier went down.

May have to look up the quote from the post draft press conference. Steelers Depot may have something about it.
