they said he was the best RB at the Senior Bowl and that LBers in practices couldn't cover him coming out of the backfield.

yeah, especially since Le'Veon Bell is going to agree to a pay cut and will be signing a long-term contract soon...

I like the pick. Some value there. This is mostly an Offensive draft. Very different than most expected.

And as much as James Conner is a great, feel good story and a top notch human being, I'm still not sold on him as a player. He still has time to win me over, but I think this pick has me more excited than all the others.

this kid is a roster spot saver ... he does so much you no longer need a David Johnson type to backup the FB to play 4th string TE because you already have that backup in the form of a RB who CAN run the ball ...

Bell is still the feature back ( for now ) but this young man has a chance to turn into a heck of a back in his own right ...we shall see

Good grief..if Bell wants to be paid $17 million a year because he can be both a RB and a receiver....just think how much Samuals is going to hold out for!!!! :jawdrop2:

I think Bell just lost his leverage..........

I think Bell just lost his leverage..........

I don't think it's about leverage, Bell is going to leave next offseason and that is pretty much that. This is just is trying to get a head start on that.

Not that I'm counting on a 5th-round pick to suddenly become the best RB in the league, but this at least gives us a year to see if we've got another player on the roster who's any good. If we're lucky, maybe we don't need to take a RB next year.

Also, assuming Bell throws his yearly tantrum and is not ready for the start of the season, at least this guy will be, and looks to have a poor man's version of the same skill set.

Not that I'm counting on a 5th-round pick to suddenly become the best RB in the league,

And a 6th round pick could never become the best WR in the league. Nah...never happens. :wink02:

And that's why I love draft weekend...it's where dreams begin!

He's similar to Mewelde Moore. A little bigger though.

I haven't watched his tape but I was eyeing this guy because when I watched the TE group at the combine he had some of the smoothest hands I have ever seen. It is football in shorts so I didn't put a ton of stock into it but even without pads you just don't see such natural hands that often. I'm talking it looked like you could have oiled those balls up and he still would have caught 95% of them.

Ultimately that doesn't mean anything but this pick gives me a good feeling without having seen any tape. Feels sort of Will Johnson-ish and it makes me wonder who he is competing with. Is he competing for Grimbles spot as 3rd TE or will the competition be with Fitz and Ridley? They love Nix so there is no way he is competing with him.

Any relation to Curtis Samuels from OSU, drafted last year to Carolina?

Pittsburgh Steelers: Jaylen Samuels, TE/RB, N.C. State A Grade

I thought Jaylen Samuels could go in the third round, but it seems like he fell to the fifth frame because he doesn't have a natural position. However, Samuels is an athletic player who is a Swiss Army Knife type who can contribute in multiple facets. I love this pick for Pittsburgh.

to bad Kaboly spent so much time dogging the Steelers draft that he couldn't find the time to even get the players names right ( note he calls him Jaylen Smith whom the cowboys drafted rd 2 in 2016 a LB )

I haven't seen anything about that. Usually they will mention that in any article about the guy if he has NFL bloodlines. My guess would be no.

Probably shouldnt have , but I let him have it on twitter ( the koolaid drinking fans will probably unfollow me for it )

I said this ....
instead of dogging the team for not drafting to your expectations how about doing your job to ours and getting the picks right ? Jaylen Smith was drafted by the Cowboys RD2 2016 we drafted Jaylen Samuels .... don't become Mark Madden ( or is it to late ?

The man is too short to be a long term effective TE in the NFL, but he should be able to catch balls out of the backfield as a RB. Would not expect him to do much running up the middle, but if he can get to the edge he may be effective there.

I'm glad somebody called him on it. It's a bush league job out of him, or he has become Mr. Hot Takes. Either way....not a good look for him. Someone who follows a professional football team and doesn't even account for everything that can happen after the draft and doesn't even acknowledge FA signings is either incompetent or pushing another agenda.

I don't have a Twitter account. I have a hard time suffering fools in my old age. :chuckle:

I probably should get involved just to be able to get the most updated messages, but I just don't want to deal with all the other stuff that comes with Twitter.

Got to confess. Don't know much about this young man, but have been reading, and watching some of his work since yesterday . Don't know if he would ever be a featured back, but he looks like someone the defense will have to account for when he comes on the field. The kind of player that may have a long and fruitful stay in Pittsburgh. Sorta like Rocky did.

Wasn't there another training camp wonder back that was supposed to return kicks. (but aren't most kickoffs touchbacks anyways?)

If it's 2008 Mewelde Moore then I'll take him. Bye bye Frenchy.

Intriguing write up mostly based on testing #'s so who knows what any of it will actually mean. Bottom line, the #'s point to a more agile and faster version of Jordan Howard.

this pick is gonna come back to bite us in 5 years, he's gonna demand RB/TE/FB/KR money :chuckle:

In college, he mostly lined up as slot receiver.
