I'd be shocked if the Steelers move up.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are typically a fairly conservative organization when it comes to roster building. They like to accumulate draft picks and sign their own players to extensions rather than make big swings for star prospects or chase expensive free agents. But with Ben Roethlisberger's career drawing to a close and a number of contracts set to expire next season, the Steelers have adjusted their strategy since last offseason to allow for more aggressiveness. They signed Joe Haden (https://247sports.com/Player/Joe-Haden-24784) in the preseason last year and added Morgan Burnett (https://247sports.com/Player/Morgan-Burnett-24627) in free agency this offseason. They traded for veterans Vance McDonald (https://247sports.com/Player/Vance-McDonald-31791) and J.J. Wilcox, and may explore similar moves if they present themselves this offseason.

I would rather see the Steelers move down and pick up another draft choice or two...

I think many of us would, be it never happens. :chuckle:

I'd rather see them move up than down. Moving up is a good sign they saw something they really liked and went for it. Those have worked out well for us most of the time in the past. Trading down means you looked at everything available and went "meh, there isn't anything worth being excited about here, we'd rather add some random fourth-rounder where we don't even know who the hell is going to be available - that's how pumped up we are about our first-round draft pick." Pretty underwhelming.

We're not in stockpile mode right now. A year, maybe two, to fix two or three obvious problems, that's the name of the game here.

Picking at their slot, it's all about how the dominoes fall. If a guy at the top of their board falls in their lap, there's no way they trade down. But if there are 3 guys of equal value available and they have a chance to drop 5-6 spots and add a pick, I think they will.

Ricardo Colclough wasn't one of those times...

Yeah, but Polamalu, Ben, Casey Hampton to name a few that did ... plus we're talking about the first-round pick. Later rounds like Colclough, there's not as much of the "get the ONE player who you know is going to be a difference-maker" - I mean, you already passed on him at least once.

I think the last time we moved up in the 1st round was to get Troy.

Yep, and it was 2003. Fifteen years since we've traded up in the first round.

We traded up in 2006 for Santonio Holmes.

Very well indeed, seeing as we traded him to the Jets for a fifth round pick, then traded that pick to the Cardinals for McFadden and a sixth round pick, which we used to pick up a nobody named Antonio Brown.

And yeah, I forgot about Bongtonio.

Will Cleveland take Bell so we can draft Barkley?
