T.J. Watt Plans To Work On Pass Rush, Playing In Space During Offseason

By Matthew Marczi (http://www.steelersdepot.com/author/matthew-marczi/) March 11, 2018 at 06:20 amWhile the Pittsburgh Steelers were fortunate enough to get two very solid seasons from rookie starters last year in first-round outside linebacker T.J. Watt and second-round wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, I feel as though some are almost bracing themselves for an ‘inevitable’ regression.
After all, just last season, we were expecting to see much more growth from two rookie starters of the 2016 class, first-round cornerback Artie Burns and second-round safety Sean Davis, and some people already want to see them benched, or even cut.
I have a hard time envisioning that sort of regression for either Watt or JuJu, but perhaps Watt especially, who is about as driven a player as I’ve seen enter the league with the Steelers in a while. Considering his background, his performance as a rookie was already impressive.
And he is hungry to get better. Telling Missi Matthews recently for the team’s website (http://www.steelers.com/videos/videos/Face-Time-Watt-will-always-want-more/6254092a-f652-4c52-9e4b-34f490bf2852) that he is a goal-oriented person, he talked about how he wants to improve this offseason, and how his target areas are a result of reviewing his season and determining where his weak spots were by the end of the year.
“There are so many plays out there that I wish I would have made”, he said, after acknowledging that he did make some plays. He finished the year with seven sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble. “I definitely grew throughout the season, but I’ll always want more”.

ALvin "Bud" Dupree is doing nothing this off-season. Like most first round draft picks who get handed a starting spot, he is lazy, entitled, and uninterested in fixing the holes in his game.

He has vowed to watch zero film. Not lift a single weight - in fact he has hired someone to serve him his meals bite by bite and switched everything in his house to voice activated. He won't be lifting a finger until training camp opens.

Further, Dupree said the only edge he was interested in setting was the edge of his seat at the VIP room in the club.

The only quote provided was "Man...I worked out all last year...just hit it hard with Chuckie S and that. It didn't do squat come the season. I still stunk. So, this year -- new plan. I'm not gonna do a single thing. It's gotta work!"

:chuckle:

I'm sure he's being fitted for it as we speak. He had a 4-D body mold of his entire body made for ultimate comfort.

Isn't that where Rocky trained before beating Drago?

That's not tough enough. He can do better. Only lazy athletes pull sleds for training purposes.

Heard a rumor today that the Steelers are talking switching Watt and Dupree. Put Watt against the RT and Bud on the LT. May see Watt's sack numbers rise if this is true.

Heard a rumor today that the Steelers are talking switching Watt and Dupree. Put Watt against the RT and Bud on the LT. May see Watt's sack numbers rise if this is true.

Per Dale Lolley from dkpittsburghsports.com

According to a source, another option the team is strongly considering is having outside linebackers T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree flip sides.

Such a move would mean Dupree moves over to the right side of the defense, with Watt sliding over to line up on what is typically the opposing offense's strong side -- over tight end.

The move would be made for several reasons:

• Watt is better in coverage than Dupree and would be more adept at covering those tight ends.

• The Steelers also feel Dupree's speed rushes might be more effective at right outside linebacker, where he could work as a complement next to Cameron Heyward. Heyward's consistent push up the middle could keep quarterbacks from stepping up on Dupree's outside speed move. And Heyward's demand of double teams should get Dupree more matchups on running backs or tackles one-on-one from the blind side.

• The Steelers also feel Watt's heavy hands might be put to better use against right tackles, who are typically more power-type players than left tackles, who rely more on finesse. That's especially true in the run game.

According to sources, the Steelers were not unhappy with the production they got from Watt in his rookie season or Dupree in his third, but they would like to see both take another step. The two combined for 13 sacks last season and dropped into coverage more than in previous seasons. But just because they're being asked to play more in space doesn't mean Watt and Dupree can't bump their sack totals up.

It used to be that teams automatically put their best pass rusher on the right side of their line to come from the quarterback's blind side. But in recent years, we've seen that change, most notably with Von Miller in Denver and Justin Houston in Kansas City.

That would be the same rumor I was referring to. Thanks for posting that.

... rumor has it that may be one of Joe Flacco's throws that eventually resulted in a pass interference penalty.
