Well at least the Steelers know the answer to a TE isn't on the team yet. I'd be shocked if they drafted either of these guys, but ya never know! :chuckle:

Just a side note Born2Steel started a Combine thread here

Will the Pittsburgh Steelers draft a tight end this year? It’s possible even though the team is currently expected to retain Jesse James and Vance McDonald for the 2018 season. With that said, we now know the Steelers have met with at least a few tight ends at the NFL combine in Indianapolis this week.

They met with a lot of TE's last year also.

Can't say I blame them. Tight end may not be as bad as ilb, olb, or s but I'm not sold on the current group. They haven't had a reliable starting te since heath Miller retired

Met with South Carolina TE Hayden Hurst. Whom was drafted by the Pirates in 2012 and played for two seasons until walking onto Carolina's football team.

Hurst is a talented TE with very good hands plus good enough speed to create separation down field, but he'll turn 25 years old in August.

Don't like his age but I'd take him in round 3.

I'd be happy with Dissly in round 5.

Age is always an interesting factor.

If he’s ready to play now, IMO it’s a non-factor. Sure, he won’t play for a decade, but if I can get 5 solid years from a draft pick, why not? Even he his play diminishes at 30, so be it... it’s the same as losing any player after their rookie contract (as a free agent).

That said... if he needs two seasons to develop, and then his prime runs out by 30... well... that is indeed a concern.

I feel better about this TE class than last years. I do think that last years class was way more athletic and had some just ridiculous pass catchers, but they weren’t actually TEs. They all seemed to block worse than Jesse James.

Been reading some stuff that makes me think this years class can actually do TE stuff, not just be a large WR.

Gesicki just ran a 4.54 forty. Please be there in round 2.

Hurst ran a 4.67. Per Jeremiah, he had the best showing of all the TE's at the combine.

Yeah, I think more guys with ability to block. I think Goedart is good at both receiving and blocking. Fumagali a better blocker and more of a plodder as a route runner. Gisecki is athletic as all hell but not sure if he is much of a blocker. Andrews looks like a willing blocker, but not sure if he will develop into a complete TE that blocks as well as receives.

Either way, I like the fact they are kicking a lot of tires on TE's. IMO, they have a team of backup Tight Ends on the Steelers roster right now.

Todd McShay takes a stab in the dark, has Steelers taking a TE, in his latest Mock Draft

Mike Mayock (and a few others) said that he had the best Combine (take “football in shorts” for what it’s worth). One of them said that if Hurst wasn’t 25, he’d be the top TE in this draft.

My buddy is an SEC aficionado, and LOVES Hurst.

As I said earlier: if he’s ready to play, then why not.

Didn't Weeden take the same route? Played baseball for a while then went to college for football? Get drafted, have a flash career, and be done at the end of your rookie contract./5th yr option. I still like it better than the Lebron James option.

Steelers Heading to Great Northwest for Another Tight End?

Mark Bruener may have been the greatest blocking tight end in Steelers history, and he may have found another at his old school in Will Dissly.

I’d be disappointed if they took a TE in round one. It’s the least of their worries behind ILB, OLB, S, RB, WR...
