View Full Version : I have little faith for next season

I know it's way too early to develop opinions on next season, but this is the first time in a while that I've gone into an offseason believing that the Steelers don't have a chance to win the Super Bowl next season.

Perhaps having our defense annihilated by Blake Bortles is still too fresh in my mind, but I don't see things getting better next year. We're keeping our entire defensive staff (which blows my mind), money will be tight in Free Agency (especially if we re-sign Bell), and looking at lists of free agents, I'm not sure there is even a lot to load up with.

Unless a few of the following things happen, I don't know that I can really get excited about the 2018 season:

We shake up the defensive staff
Tomlin acknowledges that discipline IS an issue that promises to tighten things up
We (somehow) get some good linebacker depth, and maybe shake things up at safety
Shazier makes a miraculous recovery and is able to play next season

I'm a firm believer that defense wins championships, and at the moment, ours is not ready to win at the highest level.

First impressions are everything.

Advice, it isn't in good taste for your first post on the forum to be complaining about the team. That is instant grounds for you be labeled a troll.

Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree with what you're saying, but it would serve you better to introduce yourself first before talking about something like this. Especially after having to deal with the stinker of another Patriots Super Bowl.

With that said, have fun.

There is going to be a dropoff from 13-3 for at least two reasons, although given how the bye worked out so be it

Lower probability of winning so many close games

An 8-2 record in one-score games suggests the Steelers are likely to decline next season

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/22146300/predicting-2018-vegas-win-totals-all-32-nfl-teams-unders-season

And a more difficult schedule - play AFC West and NFC South next season rather than AFC South without Watson in Houston along with NFC North without Rodgers in Green Bay in 2017

Making up for when we played the Broncos on the road every year when we had a key player who couldn't play in the high altitude?

At any rate, I think we should take advantage of the homefield advantage and play some pranks. Like surprise them with a rabid dog waiting in the locker room when they walk in ... bunch of rattlesnakes randomly let loose behind their bench (was going to go with a dozen beehives but those might also get into the crowd) ... 80" monitors installed on their sideline playing gay fetish porn very loudly ... that kind of thing, harmless jokes.

Aside from the two against the Browns, almost every single game has the potential to be a “prime time” game.

The only “dud” would be Tampa... but, the NFL really wants them to be the next big thing; so, I could see our Thursday night game be against them.

I appreciate the advice. I hadn't even thought of how my first statement would come off.

I'm not trying to troll, and usually I'm much more optimistic, but the beginning of this offseason has the definition of insanity running through my head:

"Doing the same thing over again and expecting different results".

I want to believe that the defensive staff will attack next season with a whole new mindset. I want to believe that after seemingly having a new story come out about the Steelers every week, that we'll learn to keep things in house and just do work. However, right now, after being able to stop Blake Bortles, it's just hard to imagine that coming to fruition.

As time passes, I'm sure I'll feel better about next season and my faith will return, but for now, it's hard to imagine.

Ben gave us 42 reasons to beat the Jags and we still came up short. Unless the defense magically figures out how to tap lost speed and talent, we will probably win the division and lose in rounds 1-2.

This team choked away a Super Bowl title this year. Everything lined up and was pretty much handed to them on a silver platter and they dropped the ball...now they are going into 2018 possibly without their best defensive player and arguably one of their best (if not best) offensive players. This team will be lucky to go 10-6/11-5 in 2018 if those two aren’t playing in a Steelers uniform. If Haden doesn’t return, 10-6 will be the best they’ll get and that will be a struggle...

This team cannot keep this defensive coaching staff intact and expect to win a Super Bowl. Coaching is the biggest problem and the defensive coaches that remain are not cutting it

Exactly ! This team was lucky to win the games they did against 'sub-par' teams with this crap defense and coaching. Hell, they were lucky to beat teams in our own division, and that's including Cleveland. Next year I could see them lucky to go .500 much less win the division. Pathetic coaching and even pathetic ownership !

Born2Steel

No! It is never a given season to win it all. The expectation that we should win it all is sometimes the biggest thing working against us. We DID beat the Patriots. 2 losses to the Jags are what we need to get figured out. You're not going to win every game, nobody does. And some losses leave you wondering just what in the hell happened. You have to support the team week in and week out. When they are playing badly, you get behind them and encourage. It's ok to be critical of things, but the constant wanting guys fired gets old. The constant moaning that players suck gets old. Even when the team wins a game some on here complain they didn't win the right way or by enough points. 13 wins, swept the division, first round bye, and for many of you guys, the season just plain sucked. Some of you need a real losing streak to gain some perspective. If this team was a contender last season, why wouldn't they be contenders next season?

Serious question does anyone remember the last time the Patriots* were EVER called for PI, defensive holding, or offensive holding? I swear they never get shit ever called against them, and their play isn't exactly clean either. Martavis Bryant was basically put in an arm bar while making a 1 handed catch, no call. It's shit like that that pisses me off, the pats always get away with crap like that. You sneeze on gronk or brady's WR's though and it's raining flags.

They play base defenses with no scheme in all-star games. No blitzing, No stunts. Man on man, gap assignment defense, man coverages. What exactly are the defensive coaches supposed to be coaching? It's an All-Star game, it's all just for funzees. Offensive huddles sound a lot like "He AB, just go deep and i'll throw it up to you". OR "Okay AJ, your turn. Just get open". It makes a preseason game look like playoff preparation by comparison.
