President Barack Obama plans to appoint Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward to the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, the White House announced Thursday.

The commission coordinates with government agencies to get more Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to take part in federal programs for businesses, agriculture, economic development and several other fields.

Ward, voted the Most Valuable Player in the Steelers' Super Bowl XL victory, was born to a Korean mother and black father. His Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation helps mixed-race children who face discrimination. Ward is the second member of the Steelers' organization to get an appointment, after Obama picked owner Dan Rooney to be the U.S. ambassador to Ireland.
