View Full Version : How Much Are We Missing Dupree?

Seemingly somewhat becoming an afterthought rather quickly is the fact that the Pittsburgh Steelers defense on Sunday was without the services of third-year starting outside linebacker Bud Dupree, who has been dealing with a super-secret shoulder injury through most of August and September, going back to the early stages of training camp.

This was supposed to be the former first-round pick’s big breakout year, but it is currently being postponed because of this injury, and it is not clear as of the time of this writing when his year will actually begin.

We should presumably learn more from Head Coach Mike Tomlin in just a bit later today during his weekly pre-game press conference, during which he is expected to update the injury situation of many players, including, notably, Stephon Tuitt, and no doubt J.J. Wilcox as well. Neither defender finished Sunday’s game, the former with an arm injury, the latter with a head injury.

Part of the reason that Dupree’s absence was put on the backburner was the fact that the Steelers had another first-round outside linebacker debuting on the day, that being T.J. Watt, who started the game and played the majority of the team’s snaps on the right side. He managed to record two sacks and an interception to go along with six tackles, one of which came on special teams.

For me, anyway you look at it, Dupree is a disappointment thus far. He needs to get back on the field and prove his worth. Anything less than 10 sacks from him this year and he's 'just a guy.'

Who needs Alvin when we have ChickaWatt? :chuckle:

Really? Its one game against a team coming off a 1-15 season that is starting a rookie QB who held onto the football too long. That article just made the entire internet dumber by being written.

I know right.....last week some are questioning why Chickillo is even on the roster and now that he gets a couple Jasom Worlidong sacks there are calls that the Steelers and their fans don't even miss Dupree.

They should just release Dupree and plan to go with Chickillo and Moats at LOLB the entire season. See how that is gonna work out.

Many fans overreact to everything. All things are revealed over time.

I hope that Dupree gets healthy and plays soon. I still believe he is the most talented pass rusher on that side, and that he will be a very good player if he can stay healthy. The deeper this team is, and the more effective pass rushers the better. They can all be rotated in and stay fresh to attack opposing quarterbacks, preferably with a solid lead and opposing offenses forced to pass in an effort to catch up. If Watt and Chickillo can continue to play well and Dupree take that next step, Harrison can get spot duty and stay fresh while the pass rushers will be able to come in waves.

The other reason that it would be ideal and amazing if Dupree comes back and grabs 10+ sacks is that maybe just maybe the Steelers can stop spamming the position in the early rounds of the draft.

Dupree/Chickillo/Moats
Watt/Dude from Injured Reserve/Random player

It would be nice to have your top 4 bookends off the edge "locked in" for once.

Last season, when Dupree was put into the lineup, the defense went from pretty good to very good.

Dupree is the real deal.

If he ever learns how to not get run upfield past the play, he will be a legit 10 sack/season OLB.

This right here is where its at!!

Dupree is big, quick and fast, but doesn't use his hands well to get the RT hands off him in the pass rush and gets run out the back of the pocket. When he does that, he will shorten the arc and get to the QB more often. I was a big fan of Chickillo's strength, quickness and motor, but as much as I like to see him play....Dupree is the better player. For the depot to write an article saying we don't miss Dupree after a few dong sacks against a rookie QB makes us all dumber for reading it.

Steelers Depot is great when they do good things. But they got about 3 guys on staff there whose job it is to simply generate page view content. No real analysis and it is basically the internet equivalent of your local sports radio guy saying something so the phone system lights up.

In contrast they have a couple of guys that do some well researched and thoughtful work. A shame that they feel the need to post the crap more often.

Finally someone speaks some sense! This talk of trading Dupree is nonsense.

They got away with not having him in Cleveland, and I think they will be able to get away with not having him against Minnesota, but against teams like Green Bay and New England, they'll need him

Agreed. Kozora is the man. Always has great info. The other guys could use some work on their football and Steelers knowledge.

He said after Sunday’s game that he was told when he arrived at the facilities that he would not be playing. “I was sent to get a second opinion, and it was more than [we thought] it was”, he said. But he added, “next week I’ll be out there and deal with the pain”.

Christ...deal with the pain? Hate to be a negative nancy but it sounds like an injury that could linger for a while
