T.J. WATT
Outside Linebacker

CLEVELAND – When he came into the NFL, T.J. Watt (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/tj-watt/d2e2d598-4996-48fe-b65f-82cea17a0d84/) didn’t want to have to do so in his brother’s shadow. As it turns out, he did something in the first game of his rookie season that his more celebrated brother, J.J., hasn’t been able to accomplish at any point during his own decorated professional career.

In the Steelers’ 21-18 victory over the Browns today at FirstEnergy Stadium, T.J. Watt accounted for two sacks and an interception on an afternoon when offense was hard to come by for the visiting team. Watt recorded his two sacks earlier in the game, and he saved his takeaway for a more critical juncture.

With the Steelers trying to protect a 21-10 lead in the fourth quarter, the Browns were helped by an unnecessary roughness penalty that was called on Watt at the tail end of a sack by Anthony Chickillo (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/anthony-chickillo/7da2456b-1f69-4602-9b96-b9137ac43280/). On the very next play, Watt dropped into coverage, and he got pretty deep into the right flat. Rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer either didn’t see him or thought he could get the ball over him as he was trying to get it to Kasen Williams. Watt went high into the air to make the interception at the 17-yard line, and then he returned it 17 yards to give the offense possession at the Pittsburgh 34-yard line.

T.J. Watt is the Steelers Digest Player of the Week.

Also considered were Antonio Brown (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/antonio-brown/859114e9-d70b-477b-8eaf-6f34bb1ffc03/), who finished with 11 catches for 182 yards; Jesse James (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/jesse-james/e4413009-7466-4526-bb36-36e1196dfaba/), who caught six passes for 41 yards and two touchdowns; Anthony Chickillo, who had six tackles and two sacks on defense, and recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown on special teams; Tyler Matakevich (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/tyler-matakevich/10dd6343-8ca0-4d43-b68b-5eb0ebae8045/), who blocked that punt; Joe Haden (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/joe-haden/5dbdc747-3585-4fe7-972e-a0c068b65a2d/), who had six tackles and one sack; Javon Hargrave (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/javon-hargrave/48b2758f-1310-40b9-82b6-ac4b949dc24a/), who had three tackles and a sack; and Cam Heyward, who had three tackles and a sack.

The hype machine continues for Watt and he gets the honor.

Personally, 11 receptions on 11 targets and 182 yards receiving was a bit more impressive to me.

Brown could catch 30 passes with his feet and all they would say is, " Well, that's Antonio Brown, he's suppose to do that."

Yeah, I think the phrase is "A victim of his own success." It was a good performance, however.

Can we start comparing him to, ahem, Jerry Rice?

Rice still has him through 7 seasons.

Brown had almost not played on offense in 2010.

But Brown could still have 10,000 yards before the age of 30, which is very impressive!

If we compare Brown and Rice between season 2 to 7(1986-1991 for Rice and 2011-2016 for Brown)their stats are very similar

True that Rice has a big advantage for TD, but Brown had only 7 TD in 2011 and 2012, but since Brown has had 43 TD in the last 4 years.

But for the Yards, Brown has a slight advantage and for the catch, Brown has a big advantage and Brown and Rice had 92 games each between their 2nd to their seventh season

Rice still has him through 7 seasons. He's pretty darn close, but Jerry has him in just about everything still. That's not a knock on AB, shit its probably the ultimate compliment that we're even thinking about it. At least from my view point it is.

Watt deserves the POW because it's his first game and it was great. AB is just as good as Jerry Rice, but needs the Super Bowl credentials to be mentioned in the same sentence. Figure that Rice was one of the best players in NFL history, not just at WR.

You know what jumps out at me the most?

That they even considered Joe Haden for Player of the Week. I know it's the whole sentimental thing, but that's ridiculous.

Let's hope it was nerves, a new defense, playing against his old team, and he starts to ball out from here.

He played so-so, the sack was nice, but we'll need more for sure. Like I said earlier, he gets a little grace period with me since he's so new to this team.

Think they gave him the ball cause it was first time he won season opener in NFL.
