Hopefully that doesn't mean a torn bicep

The Pittsburgh Steelers won their 2017 regular season opener Sunday afternoon by beating the Cleveland Browns 21-18 on the road but one of their defensive starters may have suffered a serious injury in the contest.
According to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, defensive end Stephon Tuitt suffered an left bicep injury early in the first quarter and he will be evaluated when the team returns to Pittsburgh.

I know I said to be optimistic earlier...but what else can you do to a bicep besides tear it?

Depending on the type of tear(Popeye style) it could be non surgical. I guess I don't know that for pro athletes, but typically. If it tore at the elbow, different process, surgery, recovery time, could be significant.

That could literally fuck up the entire defense for the entire year.

Major contusion, especially if it results in a hematoma.

I am guessing it's a tear. He could be done for 8 weeks, depending on the severity.

When Tuitt was in, he was everywhere... including a tackle for loss of 13 yards. Wow!!!

When he he went out, there was a noticeable drop off.

I wondered about that. I was watching at a sports bar that had the sound turned off so I didn't realize Tuitt was injured. Makes a lot of sense, because that first series, the Steelers D just dominated.

This sucks. Feel sorry for the guy. Hoping for the best possible diagnosis.

This.

I hope it's not too serious like an entire season/Aaron Smith type of season killer.

The good news is... when Aaron Smith had a season-ending bicep injury, the Steelers went to the SuperBowl.

If Tuitt isn't out for the year, he's gonna be out for a while.

That really sucks, because the Defense was on fire when he was in there. Hope he can recover in time for the stretch run.

This news sucks, they need Tuitt.

He is a difference maker on the DL. There is a noticeable difference when he isn't in there. He came out of the gate on fire.

Let's hope it's not a season-ending injury.

Imagine if they adjust and dominate in his absence.

And then he returns...

Which is exactly what happened to our defense when Heyward went down. I think its very possible for the reverse to happen. Albeit i was hoping this would be the year that Tuitt would finally surpass even Heyward in importance to this defense

Depends on the tear. A minor tear he may get back in 8 weeks, but something more significant would most likely be a season ender.

Good news is they signed Alualu and he's decent depth. Sure he's not Twitter, but he's also not a free agent of the recent "cut pile".

I knew we'd lose somebody today. I literally just said to my wife, "They signed this guy for 5/$61M" and as the words came out of my mouth he went down. #feelsbadman

nowhere on the internet does it say this. no one has any way of knowing unless you personally did his MRI. as likely as it may be, leave the knee-jerk reports to Ian Rapoport.

I'll wait for the MRI and official report instead of bloggers.....but good thing we have Alualu on the roster this year and I hope they get Johnny Maxey on the line. I thought he played well enough in the preseason to be the #6 D lineman on the roster.

My question is, if it's so bad, why wasn't his arm isolated or immobile in that video? Somewhere I read that he was carrying his duffle in his left hand after the game.

Bicep tears don't necessarily require it. Most of the time it's a dull, aching feeling that comes and goes. It isn't really that painful unless it's a bad tear or you are stressing it. I have torn my bicep twice(slightly). It never needed to be immobilized. The bad news is they can take a long time to heal properly.

Well to be entirely fair, all the initial Twitter based reports that I saw said "afraid he" or "feared that". No one ever said anything was for certain. But as per usual, the internet and Steelers' fans instinctual pessimism had Tuitt out for the year and likely needing an emergency amputation.

I include my self in that statement - I was certain he was going to be fitted for a Duce Staley sideline suit.

I was talking more about what was being said here on this forum. I don't trust most of what I read on social media because people only care about reporting something, not whether it's true or not.

Steelers' fans instinctual pessimism .

Instinctual Pessimism :willy: is a phrase that needs to be used more around this forum. Well identified character trait. Not to be confused with persistent pessimism, which is one where posters actively work on honing their negativity.

I once told my wife I needed to buy some tools and it would probably cost us close to $1500. Then I got everything i needed for just a little over $900. My wife was very happy and I got my tools.

Point? Lead with the worst case scenario, then the actual scenario isn't so bad.
