He's a future HOF player. He makes Polamalu look like a scrub! Great pick up haha

Probably would have been cut anyway after Tampa got Ward. Probably could have got him without given a pick. I'm okay with it though after we got a few draft picks yesterday. Question is what player goes on the team now to make room for him ?

Dangerfield or Robert Golden could work. Big Dan McCullers is another relatively painless cut.

I think Golden is gone as well. Another good move by the Steelers getting Wilcox.

The more I read about this guy - the more I like the move.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1614369-j-j-wilcox-5-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-georgia-southern-ss"Wilcox was all over the place during his college career proving his overall athleticism and adaptability. He started as a wide receiver, slotback and safety. He also returned kicks.

Although he had success playing offense, he didn't stand out as anything remarkable. Proving that he could play safety his senior year, he piqued the curiosity of scouts who love athleticism. His strong play at the Senior Bowl strengthened the love."

I don't wanna brag or anything, but I had Wilcox in my 2013 mock a few times for a potential development safety.

It counts right? I'll say yes.

My understanding of Wilcox deal is Bucs ate $1M roster bonus, Steelers can spread $2.125 gtd base into signing bonus, prorate cap hit

I wondered if something like this would have been done. Good to know.

I like Dangerfield better than Golden also.

Isn't Golden a pretty key part of the punt teams? He's the up back on a team that has a new long snapper and pretty much no other options for that position. I'd say Knile Davis could do it but he's gone too...

Pretty much a Mike Mitchell type of Safety. A thumper with "ok" coverage skills. An upgrade over Golden or Dangerfield... and eventually could take Mitchell's place without much of a drop-off. Also keep in mind that both Mitchell and Dangerfield could possibly miss the first game.

I'd be happy with another Mike Mitchell...lol.

Agreed. You know what you have with Mitchell. He isn't going to make the Pro Bowl any time soon...but he is reliable and not afraid to put a hit on someone. His coverage skills won't "wow" you but he is solid enough to not worry about like we did with Will Allen

Wilcox as the primary backup (assuming Mitchell and Davis will remain the starters) sounds better than Gilded as the primary backup safety. My biggest concern though is that he will enter the season with only a week of practice to work with the team and secondary and without the benefits of a full offseason/training camp

No doubt that Mitchell likes to hit. My criticism of his style is that too often he seems more concerned with delivering a big hit than wrapping up and making a sure tackle.

He seems to be another safety who is overly concerned about making the big hit. If he succeeds he will start a dance routine.
